I think that only sharp claws, horns, prey still alive when eaten etc would be reason for a snake to 'burst' and nothing to do with the physical size of the prey. As already said if it was to big then they would regurge (spit it out) it when they got to the part of it they couldn't get their mouth around.

I've watched a documentary on this sort of this and when the snake constricts the alligator it doesn't kill it just stuns it and apparently when it starts eating it, the alligator has woke up and it's the moving around inside the snake that has split the snake and killed it not the size. I'm not saying its fact but that's what I have heard. What does every one else think.

There seems to be a theme with alligators/crocodiles being eaten whilst still alive, this one clearly is still moving his hind legs whilst being consumed and it is easy to see how a claw could tear the snake
