Re: This snake eats hotdogs! Say what?
^^ LIKE LOL
in all seriousness though, if i ever see anyone feeding a snake a hotdog, i'm probably gonna give them an earful and then report them to the aspca where the snake can get a PROPER rodent diet (unless it's a garter or green, then worms, fish, and crickets for the green :P).

Re: This snake eats hotdogs! Say what?
Interesting. I mean i did some research on the *actual* snake hot dog things that can be fed to snakes. Obviously this person is stupid. but....
Reptile Diet - **** Van Patten's Natural Balance Pet Foods, Inc.
I just wonder. I like the idea of the nails and hair not having to be brought through the digestive tract, but i wonder if that acts as just an a natural fiber for them anyway.
in the wild they will be getting the stomach contents of the rodent, which would be fiber and carbs.
It's probably just safer and healthier for them to eat rodents. I do worry about my species that eats mainly lizards or frogs, in the wild...
but i don't think beef hearts is the way to go : ( (which is what is in these sausages) also the casing it's in is probably keratin.

Re: This snake eats hotdogs! Say what?
thousands and thousands of snakes have been raised on whole rodents and been amazingly healthy throughout their lives. Dont fix what isn't broken?

Re: This snake eats hotdogs! Say what?
I think if a "snake sausage" was made of whole rodent - it'd be fine. But once you remove hair, organs, etc. you're removing and messing with ratios of nutrients which could cause issues. Why mess with thousands of years of adapting to living off certain prey?

Go ahead and disagree, doesn't make you any less wrong
edit: I should probably clarify - I do mean clear clear.. as in water clear.

No by all means if you can educate and back it up with something please do. All I have to go off of is the Army and a Paramedic instructor. I would say there's no way an entire army is wrong but thinking about it, no...no that wouldn't surprise me at all. The Army has been wrong before, and Paramedics aren't experts in Urology or Nephrology. But now i'm trying to figure out your definition of clear. I've been taught if you can see anything but the slightest trace of color, you're dehydrated. And what do you mean "overhydrated"? Water intox comes with symptoms, hyponaturemia, acidosis, possible edema, ALOC, ect... if my urine is clear should I be walking around with these symptoms...? I realize you also said *OR* . If it's a diet issue, what exactly would be the vitamins i'm lacking that would cause urine to be clear?

Re: This snake eats hotdogs! Say what?
Don't get me started on what the army has wrong when it comes to fitness and nutrition. I know a few exercise physiologists who have been fighting with the military for years trying to implement updated fitness and dietary guidelines.. but that's a whole 'nother bag of hammers.
if you're in a survival standpoint, its a good guideline to use. Too much water is better than not enough water, obviously.
as for what nutritional deficits would cause it to be clear - you need to look at what actually makes it yellow in the first place.
as with basically anything involving your body - there isnt a simple answer.
A few factors:
Riboflavin - your body will only absorb what is needed - any excess will be excreted via urine, and will turn your urine yellow. Many multivitamins have a ton of this - and will turn your urine neon yellow if you take it consistently. I eat enough natural foods where my urine will always be yellow because of Riboflavin, and I take zero vitamins. No matter my hydration level.
Uroblin - This is what will naturally turn your urine yellow. Lets assume you have perfect nutrition with no excess riboflavin, or not enough riboflavin (whatever). Uroblin is actually a molecule that is a byproduct of hemoglobin breakdown.
The molecule just happens to be yellow.
If you are dehydrated, the concentration of Uroblin will be higher. If you drink enough, your body will just pass water without actually utilizing it as well as it can (overhydration = consuming more water than your body can actually utilize, so it is passed as waste, im not speaking overhydration to the point of water poisoning, in the sense of hyponatremia)
So basically - once your urine is Crystal clear - that's because you're basically urinating out water because your body is overhydrated - once there is a little bit of yellow, you're just about perfect. Drinking to the point of clear urine consistently can cause a minor case of hyponatremia, actually. which isn't great for you.
That is, if you are urinating at a proper consistency and amount for your body composition/size/etc. Its all generalizations, but that should give you a basic idea.
