Post Hog Island Boa Thread

The purpose of this thread is to make a place where everyone can discuss and post pics about hog island boa. It seems I see three or four threads per day about hogs so instead we can post them here. I would like to start us off with a pic of my hog island but I don't get him until the end of July so I found this cool picture of one on the internet. So that's it.

Re: Hog Island Boa Thread

here is one of my girl

2 more of the male

He is the poster child of cute hog island boa's lol. He is so tame is weird , he will just crawl right into my hand and make a coil and watch me , and get warm of course.

Those are some good lookin' Hogs everyone! Tek, your male sounds like mine. I'll try and get some new pictures of my guy tomorrow. It's nice to see all these different nuances grouped into one post.

Re: Hog Island Boa Thread

Love the pics! I had a question about caging for the Hog Island boa. I have a spare vivarium that is 38x24x19. Would that cage size be sufficient for a HIB? If it was close I was going to put in a ledge on the back wall or the back corner to give me more overall floor space. Would love any input from you HIB owners, thanks!

For a Male it should be ok mine does like to climb , though i have seen males reach 7 feet and be large so it could outgrow it but i would say you would have 5 years to make plans for a larger cage if needed. I have my 2010 3 ft male HG in a 48x24x14 and its plently big enough for him for now. i have seen some really big females too , don't always believe the description on adult snake sizes as it all depends on feeding and genetics. I always use 1.5 sqr foot of floor space per foot of snake in general .

Awesome, thanks. In the future I would love to get a stack of 4x2's just might be a bit down the road. I have looked into a few other Insular Boa's as well, but it seems finding a breeder for these is tough. Just to be sure, males are generally smaller correct?

yes for most boa's , the males are smaller. I would try kingsnake.com or faunaclassifieds to find one , I got my male from desert moon reptiles but they are 2010 babies so over 2 feet already which is good in that your dont have to worry about feeding issues or health as they are well established. I don't like dealing with babies much , lots of stress and worry about eating and husbandry. much prefer a yearling. Some other very small boas are Tarahumara Mexico boa's , Crawl Cay boa's and Caulker Cay boa's , males especially as for a island boa's go. i think a male Tarahumara would fit your enclosure thru adulthood .
