What all is safe to use

I know I saw a post on here a little while ago about making your own tank decorations? I think it was Styrofoam. Anyway I was wondering what all is safe media to use when making décor. I am somewhat of a 3-D artsy person and will have a lot of time over the summer. I am planning on making themes for each of my snakes. I’m that nerdy. Anyway I was wondering what paints and sealers are alright to use if any? Is sculpy(SP?) clay alright to use, how about cloth or metals I think metals will probably not be used (toxic?) but I have access and the know how in a jewelers studio, so I thought I would toss that out there. What all have you guys made and with what? I am curious now.

Re: What all is safe to use

In the past I just used styrofoam and sculpted it into the shapes I want. Then used locktite power grab to stick them together. Coated it in non-sanded grout. Apply several coats. Paint with acrylic paints of your choice. Then just a clear sealant for a few coats. It's been a while so I don't remember the brand of sealant I used but hopefully someone else can give a recommendation. Naturally, you will want to let everything dry and air out prior to actually using it. If it still reeks of chemicals, just let it keep airing out. It's been a few years since I did any DIY projects like this but I remember waiting something. Like 5 days for it to air out. It also depends on if what you are using needs to be waterproof, water-resistant or not at all. Hoped that little bit of info helps

Re: What all is safe to use

Thank you, it helps alot. I was really unsure about what pain because of the fumes. Clearly I would not put something that smelled in a viv but it was very helpful to know if aired out it would be safe. I'm going to try and find that other thread to see what sealant was used.

Also, I was thinking of making some water dishes as well so if something is properly sealed would it also be water proof?
