Pituophis catenifer annectens
Well we love our Pit Skittles. She has been great. I would highly recomend a gopher to anyone but with this caution. Get it young and handle it daily. This was how we raise ours and she has only ever even hissed at us once. She has no issue with being removed from her viv as long as you just reach in and grab her with no hesitation. Anyway she was sold to us as an "Applegate" gopher and sexed wrong. But no matter she was pinkish white with rubby red eyes and little pink patterns on her back. Well I looked up the "Applegate" line and they are known to have high orange and yellow. I thought " no yellow here" ,"yeah right ...orange" and figured she was a cheap snake and regardless of being "Applegate" or not who cares. Great snake so who cares.
But now she is changing colour
She is about a year old.
She is turning .......orange and yellow. So she actually is an Applegate line snake. Cool!!!

So the last picture really shows the yellow coming in . The change is starting in the tail and moving up towards her head.
The reason I felt I needed to share this was that not a lot of people here have Pits in their "collection" ( man I hate that term) but more of you should consider them as they are great and interesting snakes. Very busy like a king or carpet , absolutely awsome eaters and very docile if handled lots. She should grow to be around 6' ish. Can't wait. I hope you can get a taste for Gophers from this. They are fabulous!!
