Re: First time snake owner, looking for help!
my little camera is beside my rack and whenever I'm doing anything with the snakes its turned on. There have been MANY moments that they've done something I wanted to capture but was too late grabbing the camera.

Re: First time snake owner, looking for help!
those are the heat pits, they're in a slightly different location on all boids and pit vipers. Not sure about other species.

They are an organ that are like heat sensors, they can detect heat without any light. Most pythons, some boas and vipers have them.

literally heat vision, think predator movies or heat vision goggles (not literally that way, but basically)
they use it so they can recognize prey (which is why it helps to warm up frozen thawed a bit over room temp) and also why some snakes may mistake your hand for food if it smells like rodent, because its warm fleshy and smells like food.. so it must be!

No, they're the heat pits to sense heat. The nostrils are on top of his snout

depends on the type of snake, some have very limited vision to the point of only really being able to see light or dark "shapes" but not much else while others can see relatively well (though not on par with humans)
most snakes also cannot see right in front of them, as their eyes are off to the sides, most tracking/etc is all done by smell or heat and smell. as for colors, snakes have rods and cones in their eyes, though in different numbers than humans, They do not have the diversity colored oil droplets in their photoreceptors that mammals and birds posses, so while they do have color vision they most likely don't "see" as many colors as we do, such as when humans are "color blind" many cannot see certain oranges or differentiate between blue and green, but can still see certain colors.
This is what the "back lining" of your eye is composed of, a snake would have a similar, but less complex structure
when light enters your eye, it actually refracts the light onto the inside back of your eye, which is what senses color/light/etc. people who need glasses have poorly shaped eyes, and therefore the light is "refracted" poorly and shows up blurry!
rods sense brightness and cones sense coloration, to put it as simple as possible :P
