Cobra and Baby

I imagine some of you guys have already seen this clip, however I just saw it for the first time today. My bosses wife is the one that pointed it out to me. As I'm the only "snake" person she knows she was asking me questions about it. She was horrified that someone would allow a cobra around a baby (and I was too but I also realize they do things differently in other countries, etc) so I'm searching for some plausible answers to put her mind at ease somewhat. And mine as well.

Offending video removed by Moderator.....

It looks to me like the snake is kinda headbutting the baby if that's even possible. I'm off to do some research and see what I can dig up.

Re: Cobra and Baby

The naja naja's mouth has been been sewn shut. A common practice in India many snakes of this species are subjected to this maltreatment. Snake charming is a common custom there, the sewing of the mouth is for the protection of the snake charmer. The snake will eventually die, then they will repeat the process...

Re: Cobra and Baby

Ya, the state of the cobras and other snakes they use is really appalling in most cases. Half of the snakes are literally on deaths door, barely alive as they throw them around tourists necks for photos.

Re: Cobra and Baby

With it's mouth sown shut, it can't eat either right?
Also, what do they sow it shut with and how?

Not the most logical question... No unfortunately they cant eat with their mouth sewn up. Your second question i can not answer, im not familiar with the process of sewing animals mouths shut. The people who do this obviously are not interested in the snakes well being... only interested in making a dollar... (or rupee in their case)

Also sown means to plant seeds... Sewn means to bound together.

oh c'mon, cut me some slack. I'm tired and I haven't had the best of days
I tried googling how they sew the mouths shut / with what but couldn't find anything.

Re: Cobra and Baby

my guess is fishing line with a very sharp, straightened hook on the end.

No ships... The pin the snake down and sew it's mouth shut.

If you watch any cobra clip like this closely, They never open up to strike, they can't.

and Rogue, what has already been said about posting cruelty videos??

Maybe you missed it when it was a hot topic, so I'll cut you a little slack here, but I would have gladly answerd this question in a PM.

I'm quite certain that a cobra with it's mouth sewn shut being harassed in this way qualifies as "Cruel" (hint Hint)

Re: Cobra and Baby

Whilst this is cruel by all the standards of animal care that we aspire to in the west we ?MUST remember that the people that do this have little or no other choice when it comes to putting food in their families bellies.

When you are living in what we consider to be a hovel and starving to death the list of things that you "arent prepared to do" tends to shrink over time.

I am in no way condoning mutilation of an animal but put yourself in their shoes (or bare feet)

I apologize. I did not know that the snakes were being mistreated...I didn't know their mouths had been sewn shut. I noticed it wasn't opening it's mouth, but I never wouldn't have thought it was sewn. If I had even thought it was being mistreated, I wouldn't have posted it at all.

I'm sorry.

I could see how it could be hard to tell. Before this I hadn't heard of people sewing Cobras' mouths shut either.

Re: Cobra and Baby

Whereas I do agree that there should definitely be some type of warning posted before a video portraying animal cruelty, I don't understand why they are removed.

I think everyone should be made aware of the animal cruelty that exists in the world. Everyone tries to hide it as if it doesn't exist...

Hiding and ignoring cruelty instead of dealing with the people who do such things is why so many cruel practices still exist. (maybe not what happened in this particular video)

Just my opinion.

PS: I have seen this video before - either the snake's mouth has been sewn shut or it has been de-fanged (another cruel practice with snake charmers...and some hot owners!!!!)

Re: Cobra and Baby

I'm completely ignorant when it comes to other cultures and how they treat their animals. I knew they used snakes for charming, but always thought it was done in a non cruel way. It wasn't blatantly obvious (to me anyway) that the animal was being mistreated.
