Komodo Documentary
Watched a fantastic documentary tonite dne by the BBC on Komodo Dragon. Was an amazing programme and extremely informativre and well researched.
Discovered that Komodos have a venom gland similar to Beaded Lizards and they collected some venom from a captive Komodo and found that it is an anti coagulant. They hunt massive water buffalo by biting and then letting it run off, chasing it down and biting again and repeating until the buffalo is too weak to run away!
Also their bite strength is roughly the same as a domestic cat! they rip flesh out by just holding on with their serated teeth and using their shoulders and forearms rather than their jaw muscles.
Very good programme and if you can get it online or on "catch up" tv then worth an hour of your time to watch!
OH - they also can breed parthonegentically - a female in Chester Zoo, UK laid a fertilised clutch of eggs having never met a male. They did DNA profiling and found that the young had no male DNA influence at all!!
AMAZING creatures!!

Re: Komodo Documentary
I watched something similar about a month ago on Nat Geo. Showed all of the above you talked about. The venom is sorta pressed out whenever they bite and leaks into the open wound. The glands are between their main teeth they use for biting unto prey. Keeps blood from clotting and attacks the heart beat. The laying eggs without a male is something ancient reptiles did in order to try and preserve the species. The eggs that are laid all come out as male and I *think* they said they are genetically unique.
They are really really awesome creatures.
