finally, the viv is finished

after seeing the poor chap struggling alittle to burrow in the beach chips, i thought that it would be best to change the substrate to the coconut fibre stuff that i bought, so here the pictures that i just took of the viv finished and with the new substrate in it:

hope that you all enjoy the pictures

Looks good.

I find that stuff far too messy though. I used it damp for my brb to help with humidity but it got everywhere, in the water bowl, all over the hides and make handling her a pain as she was always covered in substrate!

I use Aspen for my hognose. He loves it and makes really cool tunnels in it.

Coconut is great when it's not sopping wet

it may take some experimenting to achieve the right consistency.

I use damp moss now for my brb, much nicer, doesn't get stuck under my finger nails like the other stuff!

I hate having dirty finger nails lol

Re: finally, the viv is finished

thanks all, yh i thought that it looked cool too, hes already gone tunnelling through the C.Fibre sub, afterwards he goes and kind of, wipes himself off by going all over the cork hides that ive given him (theres a second very small corner piece of cork in the bottom right corner, directly opposite the cave hide) and then goes through the plastic grass ornament just to make sure hes clean and goes for a drink and carries on with his tunnelling, he certainly is a character lol

and to add a note, i use the C.Fibre stuff dry, i left it all night to dry off after soaking and fluffing up the stuff lol

Re: finally, the viv is finished

If he was having trouble burrowing at his size through the chips then perhaps they were to big? Not sure. But as others said that coconut stuff is insanely messy. I had some for my corns a long while ago (don't own the corns anymore) and it seemed I couldn't touch the inside of the tank without getting it on my or in my nails, getting it wet, or some other mishap. It is a personal choice but perhaps mixing in some beech chips will help with the messy factor for any water spillage caused by your guy going in and out of his water...or you making a slight mess refilling it. I can't remember how the stuff does with poo or the likelihood of molding.

I do LOVE the setup you got for him. Wish I could find those viney fake plants. I think it would help with my own girl's shyness and constant hiding. Though if I was the size and thickness of a pencil in general I would be rather insecure overall myself LOL

Later this week I am gonna go to some craft stores that sell fake flowers and such and see if I can find something safe. There is always something interesting around in there and sometimes they do have a few gems for reptile decor.

Dirty boy! LOL I don't' think my girl would like to be dirty. She just comes off as being a priss all the time. Typical boy behavior...gonna go play in the "mud".

Maybe while I am at the craft/hobby store that is nearby I can find something bigger for my humid hide for my leopards. One of my girls is already showing a little flaking on the end of her nose. Not sure if she rubbed to hard against something or if she is shedding. Whatever the case I got a temp hide up but I think it is a smidgen to small with all the moist live moss I put in there.

Re: finally, the viv is finished

use a 2 litre ice cream tub filled with some moss or damp bark, that should be suvice for both of them, plus if u get sandy brown acrylic paint, you can blend it into the backround and using some black paint, make the tub look like a series of rock caves, or similar scenery, plus the size of the tub will be big enough for both geckos. honestly, moss would be best

I am gonna look for something less...artificial than the plastic tub. Got enough room in the tank for one large or two small humid hides. Last reptile expo I bought some live moss that is still wet today. Just need to get a bigger hide, they were kinda reuses from my hognose's old decor.
