hello im a newbie and need some advice on my boas habitat i adopted him a few months ago hes around 4 years old thinking hes a dumeril. hes around 5' feet long about as big around as a soda can he eats well 1 large rat every 2 weeks. the habitat is 7' long 2' wide and at one end the left side is 4' tall and has branches for climing and 2 150 watt lights one for basking and heat the other is inferred and runs at night and a low watt floresant on at daytime. the temp at ground level is 80 and up higher around the branches is around 90 degrees and does have a hide spot behind a big log. the right side is 2' tall and has 100 watt basking bulb and a smell floresant. there also is a platform on this side which he like to hide under. the air temp here is around 78-80 and drops a little at night. there is a heating pad on low on this side. humidity in the cenier of the tank is 35 and i mist which brings it up to around 50 for a while. just trying to give boe boe a good life and be happy. thinking im doing something wrong could use some advise thanks rich pics in my gallery

what makes you think you are doing something wrong? and are you SURE he's a dumerils? that cage seems a bit big to me but he will probably like it just fine. is the habitat made out of wood? sometimes viv's that are too big can be MUCH harder to maintain heat and humidity. do you have heat lamps on both sides or just 1? which side is the heat pad under? does the heat pad have a thermostat or a dimmer?

i looked at the pics and he is DIFINETLY a dumerils, i have a big male dum also.
that cage, if i saw correctly, seemed alittle tall for a dumerils. they are ground boas and don't tend to need all the up and down room. also, is there substrate on the bottom? i couldn't really see.

this is nigma's viv. it is 4x2x2 and should last him the rest of his life. the snake might not MIND something your size, but he definetly doesn't need all the up and down room, and like i said it's harder to maintain proper heat and humidity. i have the feeling if i find a nice branch to attach to the inside of his cage somehow he might use it, but nigma doesn't mind his viv. i put a 100 watt infrared bulb on 1 side with a hide in the hot and the cold, and i mist him every few days or so.

i think im doing something wrong cause he dosent seem to bask under the heat lamps at all really. the right side under the light temp is around 90. the left side tall side is around 85 and warmer around 93 as you go higher up the branches all lights are on dimmers to help adjust heat. yes basking lights on both sides. the heat pad is on the right side under the platform its a cheap one and leaves the floor just warm to touch it dosnt need a dimmer. he digested his last meal there and it took around 3 days mybe it should be warmer there? i have bark on the left and reptile carpet on the right. the habitat is made of 3/4" birch plywood and glass instead of plexy glass and is all screwed together which would make it easy to take apart and move. i think your right i do not need all the up and down. it does take a while to clean sliding door on the bottom would help. thanks for reply rich

if i were you, i'd keep his heating pad and lamps on the same side, so he has a clear hot and cold side so he can hang out wherever he wants. i only have a 100 watt infrared bulb on 1 side, with a hide in the hot and one in the cold and he does fine. i've seen him have to thermoregulate and go from side to side before. he's been hiding a LOT the last week or so, i barely ever see him out lately. it's breeding season and he hasn't wanted to eat in a month or two.

mine doesn't bask a ton either, but i will catch him just hanging out on the hot side for a while occasionaly
