Re: I got a question

Not really, I can get metal screen running wheels for about $2 each, but they squeak constantly and rust out quick.

Plastic ones are about $7 each, but are silent and last forever, so in the long run, they are cheaper.

Re: I got a question

In my experience, reptiles are the least smelly pets people can have in their homes.

Re: I got a question

so, yeah, my leopard geckos don't smell at all either so I don't know whats up with ya'll and your smelly leos! The beardies get an "earthy" smell when I haven't cleaned poo in a few days to a week, but its not really something I'd think of as a stink and isn't nearly as bad as the dogs the cat or the pet rats!

And for those who breed mice and rats for food, its just slightly more expensive (but not much) to keep them on cheap alfalfa pellets (can be bought in bulk from a livestock supply store like southern states or tractor supply) and it smells far better than wood chips when peed on (and also it lasts longer without needing cleaning as often) Just in case anyone wanted to try it, I used to breed rats for "show" and pets and mice for a bird rescue (and yet never have since getting into herping) and the alfalfa pellets always kept the smell to a much more tolerable level...

Re: I got a question

Supposedly vanilla extract in the water cuts down on the pee smell, though I never tried it and have no idea if there would be ill affects in the rodents or the snakes that feed on em.

Re: I got a question

I have 5 snake enclosures, a fish tank, a turtle tank, and 10 gerbil tanks in the reptile room. They don't smell.

The rat tubs, however, smell like a hobo's underwear the day after they've been cleaned.

Re: I got a question

Yuck, I don't know how you stand having all those mice and rats in your house, Wayne. My fiance has two pet rats, and even they get stinky.

In answer to the OP's question, I have around 30 snakes and I can honestly say they do not smell at all. I am setting up to breed them in the coming years, hence the large number. I have a "snake room" that is climate controlled and the door is always shut. The only time there is any odor is right after one poops, and I find it and clean it immediately. I spot clean cages every time I see a pile of waste, and change water dishes as soon as they look nasty, or every week, whichever comes first. I also completely change out all the bedding one to two times a month. Boas and pythons have much slower metabolisms than colubrids, so they are easier to clean up after. I have to change bedding weekly in some of my colubrid cages because they just poop so much. I think my FWC is the quickest to smell up his cage. He freaks out and musks all over when I toss food in there and that really smells it up. But unless you open his cage and put your face in there, you don't smell it. Regurgitation also smells awful! It's basically dead, wet rodent. I had regurges once when the thermostat broke and the snake room got too hot. It was awful and stunk up the whole upstairs. But I cleaned immediately and changed bedding and gave the affected snakes cool soaks and fixed the thermostat and they were fine. Snakes are very low maintenance, quiet and clean pets in my opinion.

Re: I got a question

To be fair, spot cleaning is *really* important, if you don't do it, you can get a smell (especially since most snakes need to be kept in a humid environment).

My ball python is only about 2 feet long and weighs like a pound, but when he drops a deuce, he leaves you wondering how the hell a dog got into his cage, because there's no way it could have all come out of him. His last crap was 8 inches long, and almost as wide as him. Unsurprisingly, he took a rat with no hesitation that night.
