Arrow Bosc Monitor in Brantford

Hey all, I'm new to the forums here, I usually use the UK forums, but i needed something more close to home.
I live in Brantford Ont. Now I was looking further into the bylaws of Brantford and have read them thoroughly, but someone was tryin to tell me that Aries (my bosc) is illegal cuz he's well over 3 ft long. Now I've had Brant SPCA to my house and they haven't said anything (someone called sayin i didn't take care of him or feed him obviously a lie seeing as i still have him and hes as plump as ever) sorry gettin off topic again but they didn't say anything about him being illegal... but he's also gained about a foot since they were at my house (he was pushing 2.5ft when the spca seen him).
So was just wondering if anyone could give me more information regarding bylaws related reptiles as i gettin right pissed with people sayin my lizard is illegal and trying to get him taken away.

Re: Bosc Monitor in Brantford

Hello and welcome. Wish i could help. I know here in my state any snake over six feet you need a premit. Which is why when people ask how big my jungle is (8 feet) it shrinks 2 1/2 feet down to 5 1/2 feet.

Re: Bosc Monitor in Brantford

Also I found this online with a quick google search .
"No person shall keep, harbour or possess any animal or animals of any
of the following classes anywhere within the City of Brantford:
(a) all marsupials (such as kangaroos and opossums);
(b) all non-human primates (such as gorillas and monkeys);
(c) all felids, except the domestic cat;
(d) all canids, except the domestic dog;
(e) all viverrids (such as mongooses, civets, and genets);
(f) all mustelids (such as skunks, weasels, otters and badgers);
(g) all ursids (bears);
(h) all artiodactylus ungulates, except domestic goats, sheep,
pigs and cattle;
206.3.5 DOGS - OTHER ANIMALS 206.4.1
BRANTFORD 206.11 SEPTEMBER 2005
(i) all procyonids (such as racoons, coatis and cacomistles);
(j) all hyaenas;
(k) all pinnipeds (such as seals, fur seals, and walruses);
(l) all snakes of the families pythonidae and boidae;
(m) all venomous reptiles;
(n) all ratite birds (such as ostriches, rheas, cassowaries);
(o) all diurnal and nocturnal raptors (such as eagles, hawks, and
owls);
(p) all edentates (such as anteaters, sloths and armadillos);
(q) all bats;
(r) all crocodilians (such as alligators and crocodiles);
(s) all arachnids (such as tarantulas); and
(t) all prohibited dogs."

I see no mention of any lizards other than that which maybe be venomous. However, I did not read the entire thing because it is insanely long. All pythons and boas are banned, though. Lame.

Here is the link.http://code.municipalworld.com/brantford/206.pdf Found the info on page 15 which is 206.4.1 Hope I helped.

hello and welcome.its a shame you have such crazy laws in your country.imo they would be better licensing the keepers than banning the reptiles.
cheers shaun

Re: Bosc Monitor in Brantford

municipal by-laws are usually only enforced by a fine. i've met some people who were reported and an officer from the by-law office come and checked on them, they had no idea what species of snake it was and the guy i talked to told him (the officer) it was a "dwarf species" of Boa and only will reach 3 ft, and it was for educational purposes of course ,with most of the by-laws they wont hassle you as long as you dont walk around outside with it flaunting it and terrifying children, many of these by-laws are in the process of changing, but obviously it is ultimately your choice as there have been cases of the animal being confiscated. Licensing in my opinion would be a better choice but this is how it is. They are very strict with the venomous species in Canada however. With the monitor many people might let it slide if the animal is well taken care of and does not pose a threat to anybody, but this is not exactly 100%. My advice would be to see if there are any permits or something surrounding the ownership or a quick call to ask the municipality if it is allowed. Good luck with the monitor!

As "anonymous" call from a public phone as a concerned citizen would give you the answers with little research needed.

Re: Bosc Monitor in Brantford

yeah that would work lol, i heard a story about a man in an area close to me who phoned up to ask about purchasing a license for his boa constrictor, the woman at the municipal office told him its not worth the hassle of the paperwork and to just not be stupid with it...

Re: Bosc Monitor in Brantford

Like i was saying, I have thouroughly read the by-laws and all posted for brantford, but i was wanting more info on lizards as the bylaws posted say nothing about the allowed size or anything, showing me something ive read 50,000 times is not gonna help, im sorry im not tryin to be rude, but it drives me nuts when i keep getting the same info over and over, i understand the by-laws, but my problem is the fact my bosc is over 3 feet long, and i was told that any lizard over 3ft is illegal in this town, I want to know if this is true, ive contacted the SPCA, they do not give me any info. Ive been runnin in circles for the last year, and i just want a straight answer... Are Lizards OVER 3ft allowed in brantford?

(please do not repost the bylaws)

Re: Bosc Monitor in Brantford

The reason you keep getting the same information over and over again is that since none of us actually work for the municipal government of brantford we only have access to the same source of information as you do. The internet. The fact that our information hasn't helped you is actually kind of heartening, it means that you actually searched online for the answer before coming here.

If you want to know, call the town hall or whatever you call it in canada, and ask. Use a payphone if you're paranoid. Tell them you're considering getting a lizard and you want to know what laws apply to them.

Record the conversation (not sure about Canadian law, but it's at least good manners to tell them you're recording it.).

If they tell you there is no law, and you're later told there is, you have evidence to fight the fine.
If they tell you there is a law, destroy the tape, and hope for the best. There's no way they're going to track you down.

You're housing a lizard that might be marginally over the town's bylaws. They're not going to freaking execute you for it.

Do you think they evict people from gated communities because their obese tabby cat tips the scales at 16.2lbs and the HOA bylaws limit pets to 15lbs?

I'm sorry, but the only way you're going to get information about an obscure law in a random city is to go to the source and ask them. If they can't give you any information, you've got perfect grounds to fight any fine against you.
