New to the boards, New to this wonderful part of the world!

Well hello there everyone! My name's Shawn and I am here exclusively to learn and benefit from the wonderfully knowledgable folks here.

I was recently hired to work in the fish and reptile section of a local petstore, despite having damn near no experience apart from a fish tank when I was 6 years old. The manager of that section and I have discussed, and wondered, at the reasoning behind hiring someone with zero experience. I hope it was my glowing personality. Regardless of the reason for such a poor buisiness move, I am quite glad for it, as I've discovered quite the love of all our little critters and a fascination with their well-being.

Unfortunately, my current living conditions and a crappy paycheck from said petstore job, I can't afford to keep reptiles of my own, but I plan very soon on getting a Bearded Dragon and building the hobby from there.

But that won't be for a regrettably long period of time (as in longer than right freakin' now!). For the sake of my scaley charges, and our customers, and my own curiosity, I feel it absolutely necessary to know everything and anything I can about reptiles. So please help me out, if there are other forums, good websites, that anyone "in the know" can recommend to me, I would be eternally grateful. Since working there I've already learned tons, but without much hands on experience outside my 2 shifts a week, it's hard to do.

I look forward to benefiting from, and eventually contributing to, this great community.

Thanks for reading that wordy mess,
Shawn W.

Re: New to the boards, New to this wonderful part of the world!

Hi there!
Welcome to this amazing forum
I'm Kendra and as for reptile-y pets I have a bearded dragon, a crested gecko and a ball python. I wish i could have more but I've barely got room for the pets I have since I have a dog, two cats and some fish too.

This forum is fantastic, tons of people willing to share their own personal experiences with you and many people will go out of their way to find answers for any questions you might have.

Good luck with the job and the future pets!
Kenny

Re: New to the boards, New to this wonderful part of the world!

Yay! A petstore employee who really wants to study up and know what he's talking about when it comes to reptiles! The girl I bought my boa from told me I should feed my snake a pinky mouse once every few weeks. Wow! She was way off! At his age he should be eating once a week and a lot larger prey than that. (He's currently eating a large mouse weekly at 6 months old). So good for you for planning on being more educated than that!

There is tons of info already on this site, search away and you'll learn alot.

Thanks for joining and enjoy the forum!
Sass
