humidity controller?

The new Boa Apartment is working out really well except for one thing - trying to keep the humidity stable! I would like to maintain 80 to 85% RH (for my Rainbow) but I either get flooded or it starts to creep down.

I tried a home humidifier (the warm mist kind) but the humidistat on it isn't very stable at high humidity - it is either always on or doesn't turn on until the humidity has dropped way down. I tried controlling it with a regular wall-mounted humidistat in the cage - same thing. I tried a Habba-Mist but it has no sensor so as the temperature and humidity in my house changes (which it does a LOT this time of year) the humidity in the cage changes.

I looked at industrial and agricultural humidity controllers and they are mostly in the over-$200 range. Is there any thing else that isn't as expensive?

I have an exo-terra waterfall in the corner of the cage and have the humidifier shut off right now so I will see if the moving water will keep the humidity up without a humidifier. I really need something that will maintain the humidity without daily adjustment!

What do you all use to maintain humidity?

Re: humidity controller?

I mist at least twice for my RTBs and the ball, my white lip and the amazon tree boa get it at least thrice, sometimes more.

I've been looking into automated humidity but I haven't found anything practical enough to use. In my situation, it is good to get the doors open anyway, I worry about the ventilation sometimes.

Re: humidity controller?

Simple answer: keep your enclosure in a room that doesn't have vast changes in temperature/humidity throughout the year.
Many of us who own reptiles have a room specifically for this purpose.
Meaning: don't try to control the fluctuations in your small cage, you'll never do it. Control the temps in the room, (good de-humidifier/humidifier, heater/ cooler and a GOOD thermometer and hygrometer in the cage).
The cage will follow suit.

Re: humidity controller?

Mykee has a really good point and that's really how I manage my room...... but in the past I have also used the waterfalls and seemed to work, but one thing that worked well for me with my green tree pythons was a fogger approx $50 to $70 to buy

Re: humidity controller?

Looking for a good place this observation.

Since I got my pump style mister (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!), it has measuremants on the side.

I go through 1.5 litres per day on these guys. Way more than I would have thought. JUST on misting.

Wow.

Re: humidity controller?

In the end I found that a large water dish (or pool in this case) with a small fan blowing on it maintains a constant 80 to 85%.

(Controlling the humidity in my drafty old farm house is impossible!)
