Ok, here is a little ranting.....it is kind of long
Ok, in the short time I have been in this hobby I have noticed many things and I just figured its about time I said them out loud. I have come to find that this is a great hobby and passion for me and many other people but it is starting to get out of hand. There are many many people that collect snakes because they love them. They love the colors, the morphs, the size, whatever it is that you like. At the same time while collecting animals that you love, you can also make some money doing it, and that is fine, great even. But there is one problem that is growing. More people are getting into this "hobby", not for personal enjoyment of the animals but for just monitary reasons. There are people that are looking just for certain morphs because they will make them tons of quick money and they will go about it any way they see fit. This means no regards to the saftey of the animal, be it by power feeding or providing insufficient living quarters. Don't get me wrong, I am all for breeding and getting these morphs that are out there. Now the prices of them are a totally a different story and that has been debated before and I will not bring that back up. But I feel it is ruining the hobby as a whole to have these people out there that are just in it for the money and the snakes mean nothing to them other than $$$.
Now these people are ruining it for others that are trying to get into the hobby. Because everytime a new person post on these boards about a snake they got, there will be atleast one person out of 10 that will reply to it and say how they made a mistake and should research it better and do this and that. This comes from so many other people that have gotten into this hobby for other reasons than the pleasure of snakes and then new people have to suffer because of others mistakes. I understand there are also those folks that get snakes because of the shock value, and i disagree with them also but I am going to leave that alone.
Really what I am trying to get across is please if you have a snake no matter what type, enjoy it for what it is, not what it can do for you and how you can make money off it. Also please can we stop the hateful replies and attacks on people. These boards are for help and if people keep getting attacked by others, and i dont just mean the random person is attacking folks, it is sometimes the big names that do it to. But if this continues, then less people will come to these boards and they will become very boring and I have seen that on other message boards as well.
Please be kind to everyone, this is like a large family, yea there are some screw ups, but most of us are here because we love these animals, so lets help each other if there is a problem
Sorry for the long post.

"there are also those folks that get snakes because of the shock value"
I agree with you totally and i cant tell u how many people will come into my work and want to buy burms, just becuase they get huge and the fact that they can say they have a huge snake, without knowing anything about the snake, and making the arrangments to house a large snake down the road.

You also have to look at the fact that if people did not breed snakes then you all wouldnt have any as pets.. I know people that breed snakes and they have a breeding stock but they also have there pets. However I do understand what you are saying about people beeing negitive towards some people..

I don't have it in for breeders. I hope to be one soon also, i am just tired of people doing it purley for money and not love of the hobby. I am also tired of folks not giving the right requirments to their snake when it deserves them.

I agree completely with what you just said. Especially this part;
"Now these people are ruining it for others that are trying to get into the hobby. Because everytime a new person post on these boards about a snake they got, there will be atleast one person out of 10 that will reply to it and say how they made a mistake and should research it better and do this and that. I understand there are also those folks that get snakes because of the shock value, and i disagree with them also but I am going to leave that alone."
Luckily when coming to this forum, i wasnt hit down by negative remarks. But i have seen it at many forums, like you said yourself. A coupel of years ago, i did just want a snake to show of to my mates, But last year when i was gettin a snake, I thought its not all the showing off, its for the care of the snake. And i respect him like anything else that i love.
P.s. Whys This is the Boa Forum xP

Morning,
I started with boas, I'm dating myself here, about 23 years ago. It was a beautiful male common boa from 'Lady MacBeth' at Carleton University in Ottawa. It was a joy to raise the odd clutches and place them in good homes. Prices were as steady as they are now for CBB, about $150.00. I've started to get back
into boas and couldn't believe the changes. Not only in the morphs, views on correct husbandry and prices but in some attitudes. The encouraging thing is the number of positive responses to your thread. All it takes is for a breeder (he, he)
to buck the trend and start selling morphs for bargain prices. Watch the prices tumble!

I agree as well. not to bash or anything but i have found on some forums everyone posting is obsessed with breeding. for example one person posts a pic of his pet which he has no intention of breeding but amazingly beautiful, the next 10 replies are "good luck breeding her" . I think far too many people are breeding on a large scale, a few large breeders are okay, but it's getting out of hand imo. It's supposed to be about the animals that we love, not popularity or money.
Just my 2 cents.

I totally agree with you this is becomeing out of reach because some people are too lazy to get out of their house and make maybe a couple more bucks(no events to those) I want to breed my reptiles too but not just for bucks but because I think I'd love it. But when I know I'm done it'll be time to move on and let someone take my place.
I'm glad someone has finally brought up this subject because it is one of the most important ones for this industry, good job!!

Everything in this thread is pretty much true. But you can tell the real breeders from the people who are out to make the buck. Real breeders have to and will put time into their breeding projects, as the others will not. After a while people who are breeding reptiles for money are going to get sick of it in the long run, as they have no love for the animal they house. The real breeders will be here, for a long time, breeding quality reptiles. Thats why its important for all of us true reptile enthusiasts to stick together, and stay informed. Usually people who are breeding for the buck, sell their reptiles at much younger ages, and their animals are overall less healthy than a reptile you'd get from a well know established and respected breeder. Another sign of a true reptile breeder, that will sell you quality reptiles, Is documentation. Breeders such as Markus Or Corey dealing with high end ball pythons, will document everything they can, for future reference of the reptiles. They will record shedding dates, feeding dates, Every date you can possibly imagine. They'll figure out/research techniques to help improve their reptiles overall health and quality. On the other hand, if you were to try to buy a ball python from someone else, and asked for a picture of the parents, do you think you'd get one? maybe, but highly unlikely. Or asked for any kind of documentation of their reptiles, most likely you wouldnt be able to get your hands on it. Its just a matter of time before they quit, due to lack of sales, or lack of love for the animals. But its just a matter of time before someone else does what the last man tried. This is just what i think. Its not everythign i meant to say, im always ina jumble with what my minds tryna spit out. Hope it makes sense. does to me :hammer: :medglasse
