Comparing Python Curtus

hi everyone, I am pretty interested in this groups of pythons, and I was wondering which you thought make the best pets. I know that if all are handled at a young age they are more likely to be tame. Which ones are generally calmer or more aggressive?

Borneo vs. Blood pythons vs. Sumatran

Any other thoughts are welcome, I am still learning.

Technically they are all seperate species now, and P. curtus is limited to Sumatran Short-tails. I don't have enough overall experience with all of the different types to make much of a comment, as I've only handled other people's Bloods and P. curtus. 'Apparently' Bloods and Borneos are generally the same, while P. curtus tends to be more docile on average, and with the limited experience with all, would tend to agree.

I keep Borneos and have both ends of the spectrum, from a big slug to an unmanagable spaz. I've had both since they were hatchlings. They are more sensitive and easily set off than other snakes, even the very docile ones, and have a killer feeding reflex. Although calm snakes are becoming increasingly calmer, do not aquire one unless you are prepared to deal with a large, fast, strong, aggressive animal that cannot be restrained in the similar manner you would restrain most other types of snakes. Their strong, ultra stocky stature and failure to want to hold on to you can make handling an upset snake a challenge. They are typically very vocal when handled or even simply things like opening the cage

I think it's one of their more endearing traits. They are the only type of snake that will also 'hyperventilate', again, back to being very sensitive

When they strike at their prey they are so powerful and fast it still amazes me to this day. Faster than any tree boa I've had! This video defintely depicts how Bloods are capable of behaving (as well as how my 5'+ female does

All that being said, they are truly wonderul animals. Their eyes 'swivel' to look at you, and they are just overall very unique from the rest of the Pythons. Their increasingy popularity is definitely with good reason

Thanks for the reply, I am still considering if it is the right species for me. I love everything about them, other than the fact that alot of them are aggressive, I will do mre research and decide then. thanks again.

Good luck with whatever you go with :thumbsup: They are just the coolest snakes, but definitely not for anyone with reservations about handling them if they have 'a bad day' or just end up being overall upset about things. Hahaha I'm a thousand times more comfortable handling an agro 12' Burmese than a 5' Short-tail

I am still thinking about it, I love everything about them, the only thing making me uneasy is the fact that i want a nsake I can handle all the time. I have read that some people's blood's are really docile and tame. A1 Pythons has some babies and the description says that these little ones are pretty tame even though they are babies. I just don't want a bite from a 6 foot 45 pound snake. That would hurt BAD. Are there any breeders in edmonton?

Hey Python,

All of my blood pythons are calm. I havent had an agressive one as of yet, I also have some buddies here too and they have some bloods that are pretty good, but there are also a few fairly agressive ones. These are blood pythons im talking about, malaysian and sumatran blood pythons. We are all in Edmonton. All of us will be breeding this year. If you are interested you could come by and check mine out sometime. HTH.

Hey Python,all the 3 subspecies of blood pythons are equal in temperment,no single subspecies is neather more tame or beligerent as the other,unlike burmese python subspecies,pimbura being the most wild and unruly of the molorus group.My best advice to you is CAPTIVE BRED ONLY!!!All my bloods are captive bred and are all very docile and loved being handled.Even though there are Exeptional RED WILD CAUGHT specimens for sale,I refuse to deal with a wild blood since they are so much harder to handle SPITTI'N MAD.I HAVE W.C BOA'S BUT NOT BLOODS THEY just SCARE ME!!!As far as subspecies you have to decide for yourself what color variation you like best,RED BLOODS,BORNEO,or the BLACK BLOODS.Good luck and remember CAPTIVE BRED!!!

Biggworm, you just said in another post you had a/a couple CH bloods?

Also, on average, most of the more agressive bloods I have seen/heard about were either Brongersmai or Breinsteini(never seen/heard of an agessive Curtus), and less often have I heard about Breinsteini being agressive, but probably because there are less of them around compared to bloods.

Chris,your right I always forget that my banka blood is C.H.I've had her since she was at least 3 wks old.She is so tame just like C.B.I have seen a punchy Black blood p.c .curtis at the Vivarium in Berkley C.A. it was a import of course.

Also, to all, I recently found out from a member of this site and its important to know, The Curtus complex is no longer reconized as of.....I think 2002 or something. So its: Python Brongersmai, Python Breinsteini, and Python Curtus, not Python Curtus Curtus ect...
