Yellow Throat plated lizards

Hey, I've recently run into a pair of these for $35. They look pretty cool was wondering if anyone else has kept them and can direct me towards any really good care sheets. I do my usual googling and come up with a few results but I tend to find the better care sheets are those reccomended on these forums.

Also was everyone experience with them? Did you like them? Fun to watch? etc

I've kept a 4 lined plated lizard before, he was neat but was skittish and you never saw him enless you dug him out of the substrate. He ate bugs, fruit and veggies. Burrrowed in peat moss/bark mulch.

Hey, I have a sudan plated lizard named larry, he is an awesome and I love him. He is the most aware of all my reptiles. I keep mine on non toxic cat litter and I see him all the time. As i heard from the last owner is that he is about 10 yrs old. They arent actually that skittish and they will sit on your shoulder for hours. Mine eats crickets, bright fruit (pear,banana,etc) Real cool lizard and id like to buy more!

I don't think that kitty litter is the best substate for these animals.. and generally makes a sub-standard substrate for anything but poison dart frogs (oddly enough). It is difficult to pass if ingested by a larger lizard, and is incredibly dusty when kept dry (and therefore a respiratory hazard). Plus, if kept moderately moist (as the substrate should with yellow throated plated lizards).... it is such a thick consistency that is incredibly diffficult to dig and burrow through. Now sudanese plateds are far different than yellow throateds.... but for the sudanese.. I would recommend a play sand, or dry eco-earth or coco-husk fiber substrate.

As for beaners question... eco-earth or bedabeast or forest bed, or coir or coco-fiber (ALL the same thing) would be ideal for this lizard. I would strongly recommend against cat litter, especially for the yellow throateds. I would also stay away from bark mulch for these guys as well. The eco-earth works well wet or dry, is incredibly easy to pass through the system if ingested, is cheap, and looks great. It is also great for burrowing and or tunneling.

In my opinion.. coco-husk fiber/eco-earth is best choice for substrate for these, and many other lizards.

I have one that I just acquired recently myself. For a substrate I use a sand/soil mixture. Being an African grassland species I keep him fairly dry.

Yea I've been eyeing a Lined plated lizard that the petshop has had for a very long time...I wonder it they still have him....hmmm LOL But if I setup a tank I would use the TREX forest bedding too. If its easy for my salamander to burrow in that fella would have a hayday!!

Man it sucks cuz I want to buy so many reptiles...but my smaller 1 bedroom apartment has about as many tanks as it can handle LOL at least until I get a second stand built for my tanks.

I've got 2 - 27 gallon long tanks, 3 - 15 gallon tanks, a 20 gallon tank and a 10 gallon tank. Plus I am looking at getting one of the new EXO-TERRA glass terrariums thats 18"x18"x24" when they come available in my area LOL I think I need a 2 bedroom apartment, the spare room just for tanks of lizards LOL

Thanks guys for all the advice I think I'm going to go with a sand/soil (fertilizer free) mixture as I've seen on all care sheets that's reccomended but of course for the first couple of week I'm going to use paper towels untill I can get a fecal done. Really anal about that type of stuff.

TLH what pictures are you wondering about? I've got pictures of all my lizards but I don't currently own the Plated Lizards but you can find some nice pictures under Google images. They remind me alot of a smaller skink.

That's why I like them since I don't have room for the 75 gallon I'd like to keep a blue tongue in at this moment, but will with in a month so god only knows what types of lizards I'll be getting by late feb. early march

I co own 2 northern blue tongues but they aren't kept here they are kept at my buddies house in a 100 gallon tank since he is the other owner, but when they breed I plan on holding back 2 or 3 of the babies just for pets mainly.
