Starting to see why they were called 'rootbeer' corns

These hatchlings (creamsicle by great plains ratsnake) have had their first shed and are feeding like pigs on large fuzzies. Their color is starting to come in now - definite orange tones in the saddles - they are really the color of rootbeer.

They are huge snakes - were bitey before their shed, now have settled down a lot - still so much more active when held than corns. The corn hatchlings just wrap their tails around your fingers and watch things - these guys are more like kings or milks - in a big rush to get anywhere else.

Best part is going to be naming these - all the rootbeer brands!

Very cool, I wondered what they would look like. You can really see where the creamsicle orange comes from.

Anyone ever see an adult rootbeer? Just wondering how they would look, I can't even guess by looking at the babies.

These guys are coming in pretty with plenty of yellow. I agree Katt - that enhanced yellow gives them a caramel look.

I can hardly wait to see how these develop. I haven't seen any adult rootbeers that I know the percentages of GPR and corn - have seen some where I think the GPR is diluted a lot - just a slightly different mature color - less red than a normal corn.

Very beautiful babies you have....but I was wondering, the baby cornsnakes I have, which I thought are regular corns, look exactly the same. Does that mean mine are not regular colored? Maybe they will look different than yours when older. The previous 3 batches looked like yours too, and grew up to be regular colored. How do you tell at that age what they will look like later on? Their dad is a red phase albino, mom-regular.

There is a lot of variation in 'normal' colored corns. Most normal corns have more reddish tones than these guys which tend toward the browner tones in their saddles. I also find normal pure corns have more orange than yellow coloration between saddles - but there is tons of variety.

Not sure if the difference in color is as clear in pics as it is in real life but the corn is much redder rather than brown.

It is certainly possible that many 'cornsnakes' have great plains ratsnake genes in them as there is lots of mixing of lines if you didn't get the snakes from someone who is particular about keeping the lines pure. Corns do change a lot in color as they age.

Perhaps I am comparing different ages here. Of course, the pics with the normal corns appear older, their colors coming out more. I was talking about fresh hatchling corns, after their first shed. Still very dark in color.
