I can't believe how many people own bearded dragons! Sure they're nice and there are lots of new colour morphs available but the 20 or so species of uromastyx out there(athough only a few of those are imported here) offer a better selection of colour/pattern and size! The care is very similar for both beardies and uros. Both can become quite docile in captivity. Why have uromastyx not caught on yet?
Couldn’t tell you, but the only thing I can think of is that they aren’t bred in captivity enough. I doubt most people like chancing WC specimens when they'd for sure rather a CB. I believe if more cb's were more readily available they would catch on big.
Also the price difference. One can buy probably 6 beardies for every one CB uro. I’ve seen them go for around 300-400. The prices are dropping but until it gets to around 150ish for a cb it wont catch on.
They are GREAT animals though, and I love that they are vegetarians
I have an Uromastyx and would recommend them, since they are very laid back and like to hang out with you. But then again, Beardies are the most popular and known as great pets...
I'd love a Uro but I can't find any nice CB in my price range, and I finally got the money and decided on a Columbian Red Tail instead and my next will probably be some leaf tailed but Uro's are definatly in my forseeable future.
