a small question about rat behaviour

HAHAHAH shut up you. I didn't want to tell everyone but I will now because SOMEONE brought it up!

My rats are definitly smart. About a month ago I went in too feed them. They were living in a GIANT rubbermaid. I thought I saw a brown flash in my vision to the right but ignored it and went ahead with feeding.

That's when the brown flash came out for food, but not out of the nest, out by my foot. With some investigation I realized my rats had been living free for at *LEAST* a week....they had a hole chewed under the nest making it not visible to me, yet were still living in the nest and had taken things from around the house to add to it including sock pieces, paper and other items taken from other rooms of the house. LOL!

Needless to say, they are in a new chew proof cage :P

but yeah, we have one that does it constantly.... just sits and sways back & forth.....really creppy sometimes

they don't have alot of toys to play with, but i still do feel like i spoil them..... they LOVE rolled oats!

*** ROTFLMAO!!! Well see? THAT"S why you don't need to add "toys" to your rats bin! They just run out and grab their own! Gee... and I thought MINE were spoiled! I guess you must feed them pretty darn good... seeing as how they decided to stick around for the good chow... LOL!

I bought a ferret cage for my 'pet' rats. I never knew that the smallest one could get through the bars.

Sometimes I was seeing weird stuff from my desk in their cage, and thought I was knocking it in.

Then I came home one day, and saw the little booger bound across my desk and back into the cage. Like he knew he wasn't supposed to be out!

He's grown out of that now, and can't get through the bars anymore.

*** LMAO!! I had one that did that! She decided to get out one night, but it was REALLY cold that night and instead of snuggling up with the other ratties, she decided to sleep in bed with me. Scared the CRAP outta me until I realized what it was that was crawling up my body. LOL! I learned my lesson after THAT one and all the rats are kept in cages with a small gauge wire screen. No more midnight ratty visits!

Youkai: do you have any pics of that ferret cage? If not is it just the 4 story kind? I plan on picking one up for our pet rats when we move.
Since you said they grew out of it, how big did the rats have to get before they couldn't get out?

Yeah, it's the 4 story Superpet one that comes with a water bottle and a hanging ferret 'house'.

However, I wouldn't reccomend it for boy rats who urinate wherever they please. There are grooves on the plastic levels it collects in...and...well, it can get gross in a matter of hours.

Anyway, male rats at about...oh, 5-6 months can't get out. I think female rats, unless they are especially large, would always be able to.

Well my boys don't urate outside their bar cages.

And an idea for those floors, cut out a piece of linoleum (sp?) that has a sticky back and put it on the level, that way, no grooves! Plus you can make extra shelves out of hardware cloth, and put linoleum on it.

im hoping mum will let me have one when we move, ill keep it outside..
try to help convince her its ok... and maybe, if she wants to get rid of it (when i get one) you can have it
