duct tape and UTH's

Hello all,

I'm finishing up my melamine enclosures, and on the advice of y'all, I'm not peeling or sticking my Exoterra Heat Wave UTHs to my enclosures. I'm using duct tape to attach them unpeeled to the bottom instead.

Anyone know any reason why this might be a bad idea?? Like say the flash point of the glue on duct tape is 88 F?

Foil tape might be a better idea... better adhesion, and MUCH more heat resistant. Although you are VERY wise not to stick the heat pad to the melamine... once you do, it's there and isn't ever going anywhere.

Ok, thats interesting, the glue flash point seems quite low. I have used duct tape to hold and unpeeled heating pad on an aquarium and im sure its hotter than that. You should be able to use it but try Invictus's sudgestion.

Duct tape works fine, although I agree with Invictus in that there may be a tape with better adhesion. Duct tape can also be a bit messy. I've used duct tape, aluminum foil tape, and electrical tape with success. Electrical tape has the least amount of adhesion, but it makes it easy to get off.

He's joking Duct tape is used in some fairly high heat applications. If the flash point was that low on any tape it would be a serious issue as it is difficult to avoid such common temperatures like that

I've used both electrical tape and duct tape but on one of my rubbermaids, neither is keeping it stuck down - it keeps lifting and I'm forever sticking it back down. I have some aluminum foil tape I'm about to try as it seems to have better adhesion. If you have some of that, I'd recommend trying it before duct tape.

Gah... electrical tape absolutely SUCKS for adhesion. I found that out as well.

silicone or hot glue? do they work?

it wouldn't be as easy, but you'd still be able to peel it off when needed...it's not like you need to peel and move your heat pad more than once in it's lifetime anyways

I use aluminum tape for all my heat-based adhering and it works great. Duct tape, if there is heat involved, tends to stick FOREVER. In my opinion, aluminum tape is the way to go. Good luck.
