I agree with Jaylyn on this one.... it is a total myth! You DO NOT need to breed the female chams to increase their lifespan or to prevent dystocia etc etc etc. It's old information that you are hearing. Unfortunately I still hear it too! ARGH!

My point is tho... if she does develope eggs (and it is a possibility without being bred) she will not retain them if you provide a proper nest box.

Cheers!

Trace

P.S. My boy still thinks she is gorgeous!

Trace is right!! Most of the older books that you get in pet shops are filled with this kind of misinformation. An excellent book is Linda J. Davidson's "Chameleons: Their Care and Breeding". Have you gone through the AdCham and Chameleon Journals sites? www.adcham.com and www.chameleonjournals.com - they both have up to date information.

If you aren't interested in breeding her at all (sorry Trace ) - by restricting her food you can delay egg development for a long time (some have panthers that have yet to develop eggs at 5 years!!

Actually, I'd LIKE to breed her... she's so pretty, and babies are so cute!! I don't, however, have room for another cage for a male... nor do I have the money to pay for a new male! lol
Is studding possible in the herp world as it is in the horse world? How does that work?

Thanks!

Just wait until she's a year old so she's had time to finish growing and lay down her bones. Early clutches may rob her bones of calcium - causing MBD.

There is a thread on breeding loans on "the other site" - the jist of it was that studding usually does not work (unless you have a really good friend with a male). Worth doing some investigating though - especially if Trace's is willing!

Ohhh... I would be willing! Calypso (that is his name) probably moreso! LOL

What morph is your girl? Nosy Be? Ambanja?

Unfortunately I have very few pics of my chams, but mine is electric blue! I think the babies would be gorgeous.

You can contact me thru here if you are interested.

Cheers!

Trace

"the other site"? What is that?
I don't know what she is... she was sold to me as a Blue Panther Chameleon...
She'll be a year old early next year... what is the breeding season?

Thanks!

Thanks for the P.M. Zoe.... I think I answered most of your questions about breeding there.... but in case other readers want to know.... there really isn't a breeding season for chams like there is for snakes and other lizards. In another words, we don't have to cycle her or anything pre-mating. We just throw her in with my man and hopefully nature will take it's course. She may be unreceptive to breeding at that time.... but we can try again within a few weeks.

Cheers! (and nice to meet you!)

When was she born again? I'm thinking we could probably start as early as November?

I can't wait for this too! And I think he's out buying the ring right now!

I felt the same way as you before I got mine, but she's still here and healthy so I must be doing something right .
I suggest maybe starting off with a sub-adult, as opposed to hatchling... those babies just look so delicate!
Make sure its cage is well ventilated and set up BEFORE bringing it home, so you can stick him right in his cage with as little stress as possible. Feed him crickets and mealworms, and you can either buy a dripper for water or just poke a hole in the bottom of a tall tupperware (which is what I did). Give him light (I have a fluorescent light that is made for chameleons... the light holders liker 10-15$ at home depot) and heat (I put a large outdoor flood light outside the cage about halfway down pointing into the cage).
For cage furniture, I have a big plant in the middle, as well as plastic vines hanging from the mesh on top, and some sticks for mine to hang out on. I also don't bug her very much - I just let her do her thing since she quite obviously doesn't like being handled. When she's an adult I'll slowly start to get her used to being handled.

That's pretty much, I think - that and make sure the chameleon you get is nice and healthy looking.
