Well today we saw no corns, but my son Russ flipped this little girl under a piece af wood.

Yes this IS the venomous one. I maybe should have included a name and description, sorry. It is an eastern coral snake (Micrurus f. fulvius) from near my home in Tampa, FL.
The "trick" as you called it, holds true in this case. There ARE exceptions with southern hemisphere snakes, so it's not 100% "foolproof". They are of no danger to you IF you leave them be, but they ARE HIGHLY VENOMOUS and potentially very dangerous. Some people believe them to be too small to inflict a serious bite, however anyone who has held a small snake (say a baby pueblan milksnake) knows a small snake can indeed bite you quite easily! I certainly never intend to downplay the respect all venomous animals deserve!
