Trucks are actually more dangerous than most cars. In a truck or SUV, you are MUCH more likely roll-over, MUCH more likely to die in a roll-over and MUCH more likely to lose your legs in a head on collision.
Many of the smaller cars are actually safer. Take the Civic for example. It's a tiny car, but one of the safest on the road. It's designed to crumple and absorbe the impact, while keeping the passenger compartment in tact. It's a write-off after most serious accidents, but the driver usually walks away. How about Volvos? There isn't a passanger trunk in the world that's safer. People assume that bigger = safer, but if you look at the reports from organizations around the world, you'll see this simply isn't true.
