Substrate Depth

Is there any immediate harm to a snake by having above average substrate depth? I changed my substrate about a month ago and I added an extra layer so that my hognose would have more to tunnel with.

Other than it is an inconvenience for me to locate him sometimes, is there any physical health reasons for not having the substrate this deep?

If the substrate is safe (not cedar or sand etc) then maybe more is better. More tunnels would give the snake more privacy and therefore less stress. Of course that is a debatable point and most likely does not matter very much.

I'd say the bigger problem would be hidden messes. As long as you keep it clean, no problems...IMHO.

Thanks for your response. The sand I had him on before wasn't deep enough for him to really get into. I felt bad that he'd stick his neck down and be burrowing into the bottom of the rubbermaid. Now he tunnels around more successfully.

The only other issue is that I don't get to see him as often. The most active he seems to be on the surface of the substrate, is just after he's eaten.
