Fire Belly Toad Breeding...

Can anyone give me advice on how to breed fire belly toads...I bought 3 last year, and they are all full grown adults, beautiful bright red/orange bellies, with bright green backs...I know there is one male for sure who seems to hump anything in sigh, I don't know about the middle size one, but the smallest fatter one has the features of a female....with so much humping going on between them all how come I have not produced any eggs yet? I'm planning on getting 2-3 more to even the things out a little more evenly, and better my odds, of course I'll quarantine the new ones for a couple months before putting them all together in my soon to be empty 50 gallon aquarium which is currently holding my baby spectacled caiman!

Well we currently have about 200 babies...and up to about 2 months ago we were in the same situation you're in....two horny toads and one poor female who couldn't get away...Until we added moss to our tank. A couple of weeks after that we had eggs and lots of 'em.
The frogs just seem to love live plants....have you tried that yet?

All it took was Moss? Wow, I can't believe it, I haven't tried that but now that you mention it, I will be now! Thanks...hopefully it works as well as it did for you...fingers crossed.

Oh yeah one more question, do the eggs get laid out on land or in the water? I'm guessing they are tadpoles at first or do they come out straight as toadlets? Did you take the eggs out of the tank when you first discovered them (if so what did you put them in?) or did you just leave them alone to hatch on their own? How long does it take for them to hatch, and finally you got all those in one clutch? I have one book that says they only lay 6-8 large eggs, and another says up to and over 100 tiny eggs are layed...funny how different books can be for information. Thanks again!

I bred FBT too this year!!the eggs are laid in the water. They are first tadpoles and after toadlets. Yes I suggest you to take the eggs out of the tank. I takes about 5 to 10 days for the eggs to hatch. My 2 females laid one clutch each. They will lay about 80 to more than 200 egss per clutch.

I have real plants and moss in my tank and they are still together all the time!! Even if the female laid eggs it seems like males want to get more !!!

As soon as we saw the eggs we moved them and the moss into a 15gal tank. Which was filled to the rim with water.....after about 4-5 days they were hatched...though the temps were a little warm for them. (It should be around 68 degrees and ours were about 72). DON'T let the temps get above 75!!!
We fed them algae disks that are for plecos, that we bought at Walmart...they loved them.
After that when they started to get a little bigger we seperated them into two tanks. (One was way too messy)
Then when their legs started to form and as soon as we saw their front arms we put them back in our 40 and took the adults out. Our 40gal is half land half water with a piece of glass to devide it, which has a very gradual slope for them to be able to climb out of the water. This is really important, cause when they've got legs they have a hard time swimming, and they could drown...They stay out of the water most of the time to absorb their tails and now we keep all 185 of them in a large rubbermaid with wet paper towel on the bottom.

well...I've looked on tons of sites and stuff and I have found that if you have a big water pool with some rocks in it, the female will lay the eggs in the water on the rocks. Good luck
