Awesome pics! That copperhead really blends in well, it took me a few minutes to find his head lol.

alex_33,

That animals' cryptic pattern allowed it to blend in so well with it's surroundings that my day may have proved a lot more painful when I happened upon it In fact, this was the first venomous animal I encountered during the field study (we were studying five-lined skinks). So, when I saw a skink on a rock outcropping 3-4m away, I wasted no time in scaling the terrain on all fours (picture rock climbing). I pulled my self up on top of a ledge and noticed this beautiful beast less than 4 inches away from my ungloved hand (and face). I called the two other members of my team and it took them more than a few seconds to see the animal with me pointing right at it. Luckily, I was spared an envenomation and learned a valuable lesson without actually having to be taught it - we wore gloves and used mini garden rakes to manipulate the detritus after that.

Cheers,
RMB

Yeah, I thought it was worth commenting on Weird eh? We found a few more fork-tailed skinks after that one (a couple in Virginia and one in Pennsylvania).
Cheers,
R

snakemann87 - I use the Canon A70, I can't say enough good things about this camera!
