i have 2 huskies...a red pied and a silver one, i love them a great deal, they have many wonderful attributes.....like their independent nature and love of people. bear in mind that huskies may seem "stubborn" at times, but this is due to the way they were bred, when in the off season these animals were turned loose to fend for themselves, including finding their own food, they had to think for themselves, they became a nomadic animal...which means they can be an animal that chooses not to listen if they want to, and they like to run and run, its not impossible but it is hard to teach a husky off lead......off lead for a husky is usually not a good idea.....i don't trust mine 100% at all, sometimes he listens and sometimes he does what he wants...lol....also because of there love of people and being bred to work with people huskies make lousy guard dogs.....but on the other hand most people do not know this and can be intimidated by their size. both my huskies are crate trained, its called their 'bed', they feel safe in there, they can eat in peace and not be bothered by any animal or person in there, and nobody can get them in trouble there.....i found they were quite messy as puppies.....they didn't improve until they got a bit older....but thats a puppy for you, they also have to learn to control it.
what did you name your husky??
my male is named Akule (ah-koo-lay) sioux name meaning alert baby(silver)
my female is Shumanitutanka - Shumani for short - another native word meaning wolf (red pied)
i started off with one, and was addicted and got another...they are awesome dogs and very intelligent. enjoy yours

Huskies are adorable, that was my first choice when we went to the pound, cept the one I chose was a cat killer so we didn't get him, we got a shepherd instead (more on that later). he's not very well trained either, only sits for a treat, but we're working on him.

that is not uncommon for huskies tho....because of their nomadic history of fending for themselves its more then natural to chase anything that runs away and kill it....just like a hunt. i was told this by the breeder, they will chase down and kill it be it rabbit or cat....they don't know, its their instincts

Hey!

WOW..this is alot of work!!.....
i just set up the crate.....n leave it open???.....HE wont go inside..n when i force him in he comes out...if i close it he FREAKS....N I MEAN FREAKS!!!! barrking whining jumping(he might hurt him self)

what do I do?

Have you looked up any dog and puppy sites? Look up Husky groups and clubs as well, there are tons of really informative sites out there to help you along with your puppy training.

When using the crate, yes your must close the dog inside. Of course he will not like it! That's why it's an effective punishment!!! This is where you have to be strong and hold your end. If your pooch is supposed to be in there for 20 min, then put him in for 20 and IGNORE him. Unless there is something wrong with the crate, he won't be able to hurt himself.

Puppys go poo quite often and it can vary by size, type of food, etc... Generally a min. of 2 up to 6 a day!!! Be ready!!!

Yep i just did....

N it said not to punish ur dog in the crate....."it should be a secure place free of him getting in trouble...it shoud be the most comfortable place for ur puppy to sleep n stay in....?!??!???!

The breeder you got your puppy from should be able to answer all your questions. Any good breeder will give you a lifetime of support, all you have to do is ask.

Keep reading other sites as well, not any one is perfect! And everyone has their way of training.

The crate is not meant to be a torture device

It's a really good place for your pup to be when you're pissed! lol In many cases my dog was safer in his cage than not!!! hahaha Before someone thinks I abuse my dogs, I've never hit any of my animals but I will voice my displeasure very loudly and clearly! They don't want to stay very close to me when I'm pissed.

Once my dog got used to his crate (about a week at most) training became much easier. He went to his cage most of the time by himself and has always used it at other times to just lie down or chew a bone. So even if it used as a correction tool, your dog will appreciate that it's his corner and place and most likely will seek it out himself in time.

The big key is once you have put your dog in the crate you have to completely ignore him. Start by short sessions and work your way up to longer ones.

Seriously though, huskies are very demanding, stubborn (b*stards) dogs. Especially if he's your first dog, I would enroll in puppy training as soon as he had his shots. And you say that he's a trouble maker already. Watch for ANY aggression now. It's not cute and it will turn into a huge problem later if not taken care of right away.

I got my male Siberian husky when he was 9 weeks old. I knew the night I brought him home that he was going to be a problem. My husband was playing with him using a raw hide bone. When my husband reached to take it, he bared his teeth and growled. Not being educated about huskies or dogs in general, I didn't get any puppy training. He has only gotten more aggressive as he has gotten older. I was bit pretty bad - probably should have had stitches - just over a year ago. My husband was bit shortly after I was.
I don't have the heart to put him to sleep (even though that is what everyone says I should do) and I can't give him away. I'm pregnant and so (Arma)Geddon lives permanently outside in a kennel. I don't even attempt to pet him anymore. He bared his teeth at me last time I went out to see him.

I don't mean to be a downer about your new puppy. I hope he is a much better dog than what I have...just watch for the signs.

Huskies also get bored really really easily.
Geddon scratched and ate THRU a WALL when he was home alone....several times! Everytime I would fix it, he would rip it up again! I'm not quite sure of any suggestions to keep him occupied. Nothing seemed to work with Geddon. He hated Nylabones (sp?). Ate pig ears and raw hide bones within minutes. And would rip the stuffing out of anything stuffed.

And Huskies RUN!!! And Run and Run!!!
My backyard isn't fenced, so this might not be as big of a problem for you. On the few occasions where Geddon got loose (broke a leash, etc) it took us hours to catch him. The second he realized he was free..........he was gone!!! Just don't trust him to stay in the yard or anything. Chances are, he won't.

My pus great...Hes just teething now....But he 7 weeks old..
When u play fight with him...ge shoves my hand in his mouth but he dosent even close it.......So its not even a little play nip...LOL!......My only problem is potty training him..I can tell hes smart already...He learned to stay off the couth in 2 days!!!!!....!

Hes great!.

You think potty training is tough? Ha! Wait till your dog hits 5-8 months of age when he starts his "teens" :P You'll be pulling your hair out I swear!!! At that age, dogs especially larger breeds or artic ones love to test the boundaries and your patience. At this stage is when the hierarchy of the pack is truly formed and he will try to be the alpha dog at all costs. Get ready for extreme patience requirements!!!

Dogs that have a high energy output absolutely need to have it excercised out. If not, this energy almost always turns into destructive behavior. As your puppy gets older and has more exercise requirements, prepare yourself to allow your dog 2 full hours of hard play and running. If not, get ready to face the consquences! Another great way to avoid any undesirable behavior is to obediance train your dog and get him to "work" for you. An energetic dog who has his mind kept busy and working for you prevents bad behavior and reinforced your dominance in the pack. Smart dogs especially need lots of training and you should factor in at least 30 min. of training a day split into 2 sessions of 15 min.

Your pup can be the best pet you've ever had or the worst terror! It really depends on how much time you invest in your dog. The more you do, the more you will reap

That's good! I remember Geddon being a huge nipper when he was teething. Just playing usually drew blood.

I just went back and read all of the other posts and there is tons of good potty training info there. But, once again, Geddon challenged EVERYTHING. He would pee and poop in his crate. Infact, I think that is wear we preferred to go.
I'm telling you, this dog is insane!!!

I was laughing so hard reading how you say that this is tons of work.....it is! TONS!!!! I didn't sleep thru the night for the first year of Geddon's life. He had me up every TWO hours. He would howl (like a fire engine, for those of you who have never heard a husky howl!!!!) for hours on end. It was worse than having a baby!!!
