Flies in cage
i noticed in my dwarfs cage today a single fruit fly ... this got me thinking, and i was wondering if it just flew in, or if they were mating in the cage ... i have decided to clean out the cage tonight, and hopefully put an end to the flies ... i know my veiled had mites in his cage once, so this is why i am kinda weary of this flies ...
ill keep you all posted if anyhting goes wrong

Jason-
I have noticed the fly's/mites show up in the cage when the potting soil the plants are in is always wet. First clean out the cage, take the cage outside so when you open the door they don't fly around your room and find there way back in the cage. Allow the soil to dry out completely and replace the top soil. This should take care of the problem, but they will return if the soil is not allowed to drain and stays soggy/wet all the time. Hope this helps!

it is usually very dry ... it was wet because it was for htem to lay eggs in ... i also have a schefflera in my room, which probably is the reason behind the flies ...
to this date, i have only seen the one fly, and no more have turned up yet
i am cleaner out the entre cage tommorw with my dad  going to scrub everything to the bone

just thought of it now ... its also very wet for the last few days because up in ottawa, right trace, we are currenyl hovering around the 98-105 F mark, and that is extreme for up here ... its usually in the mid 70's low 80's this time of year, but the last couple of summers have been sick, and last summer i think the average day was around 95 F ... this is another reason why the cages are so wet ... i hate the hot weather

I use venus fly traps to keep my flies down. They work great!

i could see putting one around the cage .. but not inside ... i would be worried that a cham would fall in ... does that make any sense? LOL

Yeah in the cage. A plant can deffinately not eat a cham lol, they are farrrr too big.

i had the same prop but i took out the bottom layers of substraight and put a thin layer of carpet that is very strong if u do this flies and mites wont be able to get into the substraight and lay eggs.

ok .. .sadly u had to throw away my chelfflera tree today ... it was the cause of the flies ... i figure that it is ok to let my chams eat the flies? considering the plant was pesticide free ... anywho, big waste of 30$
