Racer or Black Rat Snake?

This guy was hanging out by our front step most of the afternoon yesterday. What do you think?

On a side note, it was super docile, just laying in the same position for hours. It was warm today (70s) but is generally colder (30s-50s) since we're in Northern VA. I was wondering if maybe it was starting to molt, or just enjoying the warmth.

One more thing. This snake is apparently living under our front stoop (concrete pad on the ground). Should we be at all concerned about this? I figure as long as we just let it be, all will be fine.

Don't see a picture, but I guess it just came out of brumation and is enjoying the first heat. Nothing to be concerned about when a snake lives under your front stoop, helps to keep the rodents at bay.

Just the fact that it is under your stoop already makes me lean towards racer. Also, racers are usually quicker to emerge from brumation than rat snakes are (at least here in Louisiana they are). I can't see the picture either, so once we get that figured out we can get you a definitive answer.

the only way I would be worried is if I had a young cat that might hunt it. the snake (assuming it is one of the types you listed) is not a threat to anyone. I would let it stay.
