Thermostat Wiring - Please Help

Good Day,
I have purchased a relatively cheap analog thermostat recently, but I am struggling with connecting it up.

I have tried several ways with no luck.

The Thermostat has 3 points L1, L2, and P. I have no idea what it represents, but I thought because the thermostat has to go on and off it must be wired as a switch and therefore I did the following: -

Live from plug to L2
Live to Heat Pad from L1
The second wire of the Heat Pad to Neutral.

The Heat Pad does not get warm.

Could somebody please help?

Re: Thermostat Wiring - Please Help

Is this 110 volts? In the USA any color wire but green is hot; white is neutral and green is ground... I'm no electrician but I do know you have to have at least a hot wire and a neutral to power anything... Did this come with any instructions?

Re: Thermostat Wiring - Please Help

Thanx,

In SA it is 220v

I eventually got it right.

I did the following: -
Power to Thermo Live on P
L2 Live to Heat pad
L1 open
Neutral from Power to Heat Pad.

Heat Pad gets warm and I set the Thermo on 32. I hope it will switch off when it reach 32.

Imo don't skimp on the thermostat. Its probably the most important piece of equipment you will buy for your reptiles so why try and save a few $$ and risk the life of your animals?
