Re: Radiant heat panels in Canada

I bought mine direct from pro products. Only ones I've seen for sale here are RBI panels. Mine shipped over the border without issue. I will be placing another order soon as I need another panel. Contact Bob and he'll ask a few questions about cage, material, ambient room temp and what are you keeping in it and recommend the right panel.

Only pro products panels are UL ULC tested which is the law up here. They don't have the same regulations south of the border so something to keep an eye out for. Lots of products in the pet trade sold here aren't tested.

I just posted about rhp before seeing this thread. Tb, what is ul and ulc tested? And are you saying pro products are or are not legal/approved here?

UL is an independent company that tests and certifies products for safety, stands for Underwriters Laboratories. Means it actually passes tests versus just something you can whip up in a basement and sell.

UL ULC CE CSA are all safety testing associations. UL stands for underwriters laboratories in the USA nd ULC is the Canadian side. UL only is still recognized and accepted in Canada. If you look on your tv etc you'll see one of the above markings or others to say it's been tested and meets certain safety standards. However in the pet trade many things aren't. The USA doesn't have a law requiring mandatory testing but we do. As a result US based or overseas manufacturers may not pay to have their product tested for sale in the small Canadian market compared to the states. Pro products panels are the only ones I'm aware of that are tested. Rbi panels for example are not. This is important for insurance reasons. Let's say your heater burns the house down. An insurance company can use that to try and get out of paying. Personally I also like the piece of mind knowing they are tested.

There was a story years ago from the west coast where an untested aquarium heater shorted and caught fire. Luckily the person was home at the time. The heater was widely sold in chain pet stores.
