First Cape House snake clutch of the year!

Our first House snake of the year pipped yesterday morning, a normal het.

The first one is out and one more has pipped this morning, an albino this time.
The normal is a nice, chunky 6.6 grams.

First up, UxI91516-1.

Re: First Cape House snake clutch of the year!

Nice. Are these also known as African House Snakes. If so they are very much on my radar-what are they like to keep?

I've heard they're an interesting addition to a collection and have a feeding response like a mini retic!

Re: First Cape House snake clutch of the year!

Yes, these are African House snakes. There are several subspecies and the Capes, Boaedon capensis, is the most common in the US but easy to confuse with the next most common, the Brown House snake, fuliginosus.

They are interesting to keep. The babies can be very difficult to get started eating but once they do, are very enthusiastic feeders. Males do go on feeding strikes when feeling mating urges though. They don't really have a breeding season and will breed all year long. They are the rodent of the snake family as far as breeding goes, they will breed as young as 4 months and multi clutch, 3 clutches per one mating is typical. As such, it's very important that the female is in very good shape before being exposed to a male, because they will literally breed themselves to death. Would definitely not recommend cohabbing for that reason.

Males stay small, around 2 to 2 1/2 feet and females get between 3 and 5 feet long. They are fast when placed on a surface but are fun to hold, even as babies. They tend to grip your fingers and explore your hands, if startled, they keep their grip with the back half on your fingers and jump away from whatever startled them but don't usually attempt to rocket out of your hands like other baby snakes. They are very strong for their size, like a mini python.

Re: First Cape House snake clutch of the year!

I've seen a few Boaedon Olivaceus conned on the market recently and am very inserted in one. Somewhat rarer than the brown.

Thanks for the info - a very under appreciated snake it would seem

Re: First Cape House snake clutch of the year!

Took these two pictures last night right before bed. A third egg had pipped, with a very shy normal in it. I still haven't gotten a good look at him!

Then here is the best look so far, from this morning.

Re: First Cape House snake clutch of the year!

The third House snake out and is 5.1 grams of flight and shyness. No other pips at the moment.
Not interesting in cooperating for pictures ...
