Scrub, not a carpet.

That's looks like a defensive posture to me. They do open mouth gape and hiss.

Most angry snakes I've dealt with just hiss with their mouths half open or even closed and only open their mouths fully when they strike.
Just does, the posture and "face". My angriest snake will sit with his mouth gaping open like this for a good five minutes

That must look pretty comical :P I've never seen this behavior before. Maybe you're onto something here.

Re: curious about the snake pooping

Estia is pretty okay with me being present around her. A couple of times when I didn't see her and as I walked past her tail wrapped around my ankle when she looked back to see what was going on. She was okay however even though the second time I reacted and shook my foot before I realized what it was. It felt like silk wrapped around my ankle. She was going through the louver windows and was almost all the way through. Then I went out into the corridor and peered down at her and she might have felt threatened because she took a strike position but remained calm. I took a step back and she immediately changed her stance. That was the only time that I can say she looked worried.

Normally I have passed her in the corridor at the stairs (my rooms in my house are on several levels) many times and she has never appeared fussed. She is not happy with me taking photos with the flash but hasn't appeared angry in any way. I think she is more concerned that I am giving away her position to the mice... maybe. And she commonly passed by the back of my chair as she goes from the walk-in robe to my en-suite (I have my desk and computer in my bedroom) so she is used to being around me.
I've seen her opening and closing her mouth, like a big yawn every time I've seen her poop.

Re: curious about the snake pooping

Wow. I've only seen my snake poop once and she just held very still and lifted her tail then out it came.. Never heard of snakes opening their mouths to poop either.

Re: curious about the snake pooping

Today I had the mic on to record some bird sounds, when Estia awoke and pooped. As soon as I heard her I moved the mic to get a better sound. So here it is. 1 minute sound recording -first 20 seconds has loud bird sounds. The last 20s sounds of her poop squirting out.
There is no file here to add it as an attachment so I put it on Youtube.
