Question to all the players(and shane too)
I am currently working on a couple of tunes for a friend of mine (his group does orignals only) and I have hit a bit of an impass in the writing process(the problem when you have trained in theory for 15 years)The tunes are in A minor (very dark and desperate) they would put you in mind of something from the west coast in the mid 90's(hey we write what we feel) Well I Now have to come up with leads for these tunes.I could stay diatonic to the scale or as I have been noodling with going for the the feel thing (c lydian) with of course passing tones to keep the tone correct but to impart musical tension (thusly a state of flux)
I know it is easy to stay to the safe and sound in the tonal zone but when we walk in the wasteland for a bar or two we create a place were we can say to others hey!!!! I do have something to say listen to what it is!!!!!So what do you all think?(hey cran man I know you know were I am coming from) I just want some opinions whatever they may be (harmonic minor demons need not apply)
Peace
Hip

Hip, great to hear from you again! What are the changes, time signature and bpm?
For me, I try not to think in terms of "should I do this or should I do that". When I play something, I either know it's what I want or not. My feeling is that you, the artist, know the same. You just have to allow yourself the freedom to make the music you need to make at that time and stop worrying about "what's right". (Sorry for going off the cheesy end like that )
Let me know how it goes though.

Hey snakemann87... a true fender strat or a copy? I got a REALLY inexpensive japanese copy (aria STG series) that is working awesome for me, and it was like a third of the true Strat price.

I've got a nice custom ordered american strat. I've had it for about 6 years now and I still love it. I've been eyeing the Tele's lately though...

I got a custom shop strat 22 frets rosewood fretboard dunlop jumbo frets and a kahler(spelling) traditional locking trem and a single seymour duncan distortion humbucker in the bridge position no pick guard and just a volume controll.I also have a regular tobacco sunburst fender strat just good old plain jane strat. My true love though is my tacoma c2c chief with the lace pickup super low action plays like a strat to bad I cannot do her justice my hands lack behind my mind these days.Oh cran man the telies are sweet real sweet I would also like to have a Gretsch (spelling) If I win the lotto. Cran I will give you the changes time and melody line soon I am so busy right now it is tough to do any thing and I am in no rush to finish these yet (no pressure for me on these) mixolydian is my fave man you know what mode do you dig? bro
