Urgent: What type of snake is this?
Hello!
I found this snake in a fish tank at a park, no idea what it is though. I think it may be a garter snake, but it is not lined so IDK. It doesn't try to bite or slither away too much, pretty docile actually, so I'm thinking it isn't wild? The fish tank was all cracked, but it had a snake dome house so it might be a pet. Not sure though.
Should I keep it or let it go? IDK if its wild or not, but it seems pretty nice. I've had a ball python before so I know how to figure out what it needs, just need to know what it is first.
We're in Utah and live where there are a lot of houses (not near the mountains or any lake, just houses).

Garter snake. More specifically, a wandering garter snake. They do make fine pets.
If you plan on keeping it, let me know, I'll fill you in on husbandry and diet.

Re: Urgent: What type of snake is this?
Ah, thank you very much. I think I'll keep it, as I really don't think it's wild although IDK why someone would just leave it around. :\
Yes please! Do they have in specific needs in regards to heat and humidity? I have a heating lamp and an undertank heater, but I haven't used any on him in case it's bad for him.
Thank you so much, your help is pretty awesome.

I agree with Infernalis; they're great pets!

Those are native to Utah and was most likely wild caught. I would hold on to it for a while and put an add on KSL or craigslist to see if anyone lost it. After a couple weeks I would release it in a wild area.

It's a shame when people abandon their pets. It just makes the reptile community looks bad when former pets are found loose. Just look at the whole Burmese issue (yes I know this is a whole completely different snake).
