Question Question In Regards To BCI In General

Good morning everyone! I am a relatively new owner of a beautiful BCI, and was always told or under the impression that they were more or less always at the bottom of the enclosure and do not really needs my climbs, but Rusty seems to love being perched up, and I have actually added more for him to perch on. My question though, is this normal and I was just mis informed on their behavior and needs, or do I just have a climb happy snake.

Re: Question In Regards To BCI In General

Boas are semi arboreal. In captivity the younger ones will climb more then the larger ones (people usually don't have large enough enclosures to allow the adults to climb)

Re: Question In Regards To BCI In General

Thank you, I tried to make sure that he has plenty of room to be able to move and explore, prefer it that way with all my collection. He is currently setup in a 40gal, which I believe is plenty big for awhile now seeing that he is still onl a baby.

Re: Question In Regards To BCI In General

My male climbs, I have a big branch either end of his viv and it was great to watch him bridge the gap between them.

Re: Question In Regards To BCI In General

I have one that climbs and one that doesn't. The one that doesn't also doesn't lile to be picked up. It is more normal for them to climb and in the wild they will eat birds right out of the tree. If your climbs embrace it and ensure your enclosure allows for it. The exercise is fantastic. Boas need exercise and are generaly healthier with it.

Re: Question In Regards To BCI In General

My BCI used to climb a lot given the opportunity. It's probably pretty safe to say that BCI lean towards the arboreal side as babies and begin to spend more time on the ground as they become bigger and heavier. Naturally it probably depends a lot on the snake as an individual as well. Just curious-do you know what your boa's locale is?

Re: Question In Regards To BCI In General

Thank you everyone, my fiancé and I have gotten so much joy from rusty with how active he is, and typically he is always out and moving around. I am not sure on the locality, he was a pet store purchase that my fiancé had fallen in love with.

Re: Question In Regards To BCI In General

Hi KBH...
I could say that boas are like people, some love to take a walk but others hate it... Same than Terranaut, I have 2 boas that climb all the time, and one that doesn´t. If yours climbs, it´s perfectly normal, so it was good to give him more places to perche-up!
Regards..!!

Re: Question In Regards To BCI In General

I've seen some keepers using cat-gyms for their boas with good results. My bci wants to climb everything I get close enough for her to reach.
