And it comes with a price. Professional designers take some form of training for it, whether it was a few classes or a degree. Either way, you can evaluate them by looking at their portfolio. Just like any vocation, they charge a fee to provide a service. It is frustrating when people balk at the price, saying something to the effect of "Why so much? All you do is just draw, right?" I would just slide the sketchpad toward them, and reply "Okay, if it's so easy, you do it. Have a nice day."

So many folks want to get a logo done for this or that, they don't want to pay a pro to do it, so they get their brother-in-law's nephew's cousin who has a bootlegged copy of Photoshop to do it for free. And it usually ends up looking like crap. Again I state: you get what you pay for. You want a logo to represent your company or organization, something easily recognizable whether its on a business card or a billboard.

Sorry for the rant. Regrettably, this year I am closing down my graphic design business and more or less, ceasing any pursuit of a career in the arts. Its simply not worth the taxes and effort to keep it going, because I cannot make enough money doing it, because no one wants to pay for it.
IMO very well said

I have an art degree in Photo/Design and I struggled to find work for years. Maybe one day people will accept this field as art, and give it the credit that it is due, but until then I will continue to work on my own art in my free time, and keep my day job as an event coordinator.

Re: Thoughts on logo

I just asked for a few opinions! Lol

Work has already begun on a total revamp of the design. For those that don't mind showing your ideas, here's the new basis for the logo:

p.s. It's really the same snake that modeled for the original. That's the natural pattern, ghostly faces and all.

Re: Thoughts on logo

Nice image, but it's still essentially a photograph. What happens when you try to make it larger? It will look pixelated.

That is the problem with bitmap-based images. Find someone who can turn that image into vector, and you'll be rocking.

A familiar rant. A buddy of mine used to do custom stained glass and glass etching for a living. Absolutely fantastic work. Unfortunately, he would run into many of the same issues -- people who couldn't understand why his pieces were so much more than the cheap mass produced sweatshop stuff from overseas. Still he made a living at it for years until the economy took a nosedive. He still does an occasional piece here or there -- now working out of his basement -- but he had to "get a real job" to pay the bills. Such a tragic waste of talent.

You said it better than I could have.

I was going to say I don't know how the detail will translate to business cards and the like.

Re: Thoughts on logo

Student - So this picture can be turned into Vector format or do I need a new photo?

That picture can be turned into a vector but it'll take a lot of work and isn't gonna look exactly the same, but it can still look awesome.

Re: Thoughts on logo

Thanks! Would it still be better to start with a picture taken from a better camera, or won't that make a difference?

You'll have to ask your designer what they prefer

Re: Thoughts on logo

Ideally, a higher resolution version is better, but that image could be turned into a vector. Like Wildside said, it depends on the skill level of the designer.

I could do it....but I don't work cheap.

Re: Thoughts on logo

K, thanks! I hope to have that done by night's end, possibly tomorrow.

Re: Thoughts on logo

So, I had a friend try to turn the picture into a Vector image and was told the file is too small.

What if I were to print it, say 8 1/2 x 11, could I then use a better camera to take a picture of the print, then convert that picture to Vector?

Can you tell I REALLY wanna use this photo?!
