Cricket Breeding

So I've decided to try my hand at a little cricket breeding, but I don't know much so bare with me. I have two tanks set up, and in the breeder tank, I have a dish with a few inches of moist peat moss. It's been in there for about 48 hours, and I noticed last night that there was some mold growing on the surface. So my questions are...

1) Do I need to worry about the mold? Will it harm the eggs or crickets? I removed it, but I'm sure it'll come back.
2) How do I keep this from happening?
3) When do I remove the container, and do I put the lid on it?

crickets require very sanitary conditions as apposed to roaches. i attempted when i was young but failed as i didnt understand the daily upkeep required to keep them alive.

That's...not at all helpful. They're staying alive just fine. I'm just asking about the mold.

lol i was just about to say pinheads and eggs need very high humidity! to answer the original post, mold kills cricket eggs and small crickets. i forget whats being used in the nest containers nowadays as i do mostly roaches. just find an up to date website that breeds and provides good caresheets for them. a lot of people just buy crickets in bulk as overall its easier but not cheaper.

1)Yes mold will kill them.
2)Don't keep it so moist.

Try and contact some of the fishbait companies that raise them for resale. These folks raise them in the millions so they they should be able to help you.

i used to breed crickets....i used a ten gallon aquarium with a screen top so i was able to put a heat lamp...the crickets seemed to thrive better from the additional heat....it kept the top layer of the peat dry so no mold would grow and the under layer of peat would stay moist enough for the eggs to hatch...

lol lets make this simple.
1.mold=death.
2.DAILY upkeep
3.remove the container after eggs are laid. you can place the nest container in a separate enclosure. easier that way. assuming small scale breeding ie: not by the thousands..
