If this is a first snake, I would suggest NOT gettin a rough green snake. They are not the easiest of captives, and their husbandry is more akin to keeping an anole or a chameleon than it is the "typical" snake.
I agree that a corn snake is a good choice, with a king snake being a close second. Of course, factors to evaluate are how much space you can devote, is handling a major concern, initial price, etc.
All have their pros and cons, but other possible options are: garter snakes, rat snakes, milk snakes, ribbon snakes, African house snakes, rosy boas, ball pythons and sand boas.
