Re: Berm Legal to own?

They are not illegal to own, as long as you can acquire one within your state.

They ARE illegal to transport across state lines or import from out of the country.

Only one correction to this statement, it depends on what state you live in, like in NY they are illegal to own without a license. And a license can only be obtained for educational, exhibition or scientific purposes. Regardless of what you hear, there is no such thing as being Grandfathered in. That is something people made up so they don't have to get rid of there Burms after the law waa passed.

Re: Berm Legal to own?

Thanks for the correction, Jerry. There are state-level and even city-level regulations that restrict ownership.

Given the phrasing of the OP's question, I figured they were asking in a more general, nation-wide sense...but it IS important to know what one's state-level laws are.

I live in Colorado. It's perfectly legal to buy and keep them, you just can't bring them in from another state or country.

Re: Berm Legal to own?

Tell him to go to the Rocky Mountain Reptile Expo this Saturday in Denver. He will likely find what he's looking for. However, if he doesn't know the laws, I would recommend he do a lot of research before getting an animal that large.
