I just don't get it

Last night my furnace crapped out. I did not know this until 6:30 this morning because my bedroom was still nice and warm. Obviously my lamps are not going to keep Olives Cage warm enough, so one would think he would stay on the side that is always warmer but no. I get up this morning get the wood stove going because it is 45 in my living room... Next thing I do is check on Olive, nowhere to be found.. An almost two foot lizard gone.... I built the Cage with two ways in one on each side heat lamps on both sides, I look on both still no. I start to think, Yep he was sitting on his favorite warm spot last night when I shutdown his day lamps, So I know I did not screw and lock him out... Well now I have to rip off the front walls and there he is, for the first time ever he burrowed in the middle of the cage equal distance from both lights in the coldest part of his cage. I put my hand in and he is already freaked out from the sounds of his house being ripped apart.... The next first he hisses at me a nice loud one then another... So I grab a shrimp out of the freezer quick thaw it and nothing no interest at all. Now I'm starting to worry, He feels cold... So I grab a pair of gloves and pull him out, he never tried to bite me or anything but boy was he mad... I put him over at the heat lamp and he is now nice and toasty and happy.... Explain to me this what the hell was he thinking! One would think its cold he would look for his safe spot his favorite spot but no he decides to try something new. The only thing I can think is maybe he was trying to hibernate

That would be my assumption as well.

Re: I just don't get it

What is Olive?

More than likely hes gone to ground somewhere for the night the temps have dropped and hes been to cold to move... sorry when i say this i mean that hes tried to find somwhere warmer usually a burrow when surface temps have dropped in nature the larger substrate mass stays warmer for longer so they find somewhere warmer since its a much smaller volume of soil its obviously dropped temps fast.

My biggest concern with this would be your substrate temps dropping that fast overnight poss a secondary heat source is needed or think about poss addding some insulation

Anyway hell be reet one night of cold wont do him any harm.

Re: I just don't get it

One thing I always recommend, and believe me I have learned this one first hand, one can never have too many backup plans in place.

I have a small propane space heater that requires no electricity to operate.

and yes I have had to use it.

When the power goes out during a winter storm, it is a lifesaver for my reptile room.

Re: I just don't get it

I have a wood stove and kerosene heater but either way when i got up it was to late he Was already taking a dirt nap... The temp in the living room was 45 so once I got up I cranked the wood stove and warmed it up in about half an hour. No matter how much insalation was around the cage the living room itself was 45.. It was an unbelievably low temp night.... Oh and thanks varanus for saying he would be okay... Update he is back to his normal self and Walking around the house a few times a day and then putting himself back to bed when ready......

Re: I just don't get it

I've had a few close calls with monitors preferring to go into cold water at night rather than
stay out of it during power outages.

I actually lost my rescue sav because he decided to go into the water last outage and drown himself while I was asleep. 7 hours of no power in the other room = bad news.

Re: I just don't get it

If a monitor is given a selection of bad choices, they might choose the best of the bad choices they are given.Did anybody consider the monitor makes choices based on the conditions they are given?so you might ask, maybe it's something i'm responsible for -monitors do what monitors do but you have control of their choices.
