Ok first off breath! Your snake is simply exploring something new in its home. I put the probe to my heat mat under the hide on the hot side. I use that to hold the probe in place. 84-86 is a great temp to set your heat mat to. Your snake will NOT strangle itself on the cord in the tank. It is just climbing and "playing" on it.

You can put it back in now, slight changes in enclosure usually makes a snake come out and explore a bit. There's a difference between curiosity and stress. Just relax a bit, snakes, especially corns, are hardy critters.
If the cable still worries you, the other thing you can do is put the probe between the heat mat and the tank, and adjust the temps on the thermostat till you get the desired temp in the enclosure. My thermostat is set to 100 and I get about 78 in the enclosure and the ambient in my room is 70, just for reference.

Re: First time snake owner, looking for help!

I put it back in, and what i did is i put the probe under her hide in the corner, and then the "string" that connects to the probe thats hanging in the tank i covered with a plant. she seems to be ok with it now. shes in her hide, lastnight she refused to go in there. so i think were ok now. the thermostat reads 84.2? that ok?? Also do i need a heat gun, even is i have thermomaters on each end of the tank still? im going into the city tomorrow and can pick one up IF i ABSOLUTELY need one...

temp guns are loads of fun, I wouldn't stick the probe in the hide either, it'll get hotter in the hide than in the rest of the enclosure because air doesn't move and its a small enclosed space.

Corn snakes are fine at room temp as long as they have a warm spot to go to. The Air in the tank can be at regular room temp with no issues. She only needs to be concerned with the hot spot. The temp being under a hide is fine for a corn.

Ok but were the mat is, is were she always lays, and thats were her hide is. so what do i do with the probe cause does it not need to be touching the heat mat?

Re: First time snake owner, looking for help!

You should have 2 hides one on the heat mat also known as her hot side. the other hide should be on the opposite side of the tank where there is no heat mat also known as the cold side. The probe has to be on the heat mat to be able to regulate how hot it gets. Keep the probe on top of the heat mat under the hide. It will be fine. If she gets to warm she will go into the other hide to adjust her temp as she needs to.

yes she should feel cold to the touch. Her hot spot is only 84-85f your body is 98ish so you will always be warmer than her.

Re: First time snake owner, looking for help!

Another thing i think is weird, since i put the heat mat in, she has berried her whole bodie under her bedding and not under her hide, but sprung out accrost her tank...

Re: First time snake owner, looking for help!

It's all very normal. My corn has started falling asleep with only his head in the hide leaving his body on top of his hide. Some snakes are odd balls and silly. I would only start to worry If I saw my snake laying upside down on its back with its belly in the air. She will find a comfy spot and might hang out there for a day or 2 then find another spot.
