dog emergency
I had to rush my puppy to the vet last night after he swallowed a blood pressure pill...he had to stay at the animal hospital overnight on an IV. I called this morning and they said he was doing really well. The vet is going to call me in a little while and tell me when he can come home. It was scary there for a little while last night. I felt horrible leaving him at the vet because he was so sad and howling...
I feel really really bad because I dropped the pill on the floor. He was there so quick and he grabbed the pill and ran under the bed and chewed the darn thing up. I'm going to have to make sure he is in his bed if I am getting pills out. Gibbs slap to the back of my own head. My punishment on top of getting the crap scared out of me about my dog...a $800 vet bill for the emergency services.

That's awful but at least he is ok. Spend some time with him and work on 2 commands, they have saved me a ton with my 2 dogs. Drop it and leave it.

yeah...he's 10 mos...still a pup...and he still eats everything! He ran and grabbed that pill so fast it barely hit the floor. My son chased him under the bed and we thought as soon as he started chewing it that he would spit it out because it would taste bitter...but he didn't. Animal poison control had us induce vomiting, but since he chewed it and it was a long acting pill...it had already started to decrease his heart rate when we got him to the hospital. I'm just so glad he is okay. And thankfully, I have pet insurance that should reimburse me for most of this. I just can't wait to get him home! Thanks you guys.

Thanks. The vet just called and we are going to pick him up! Poor thing...he doesn't know what is going on...a bunch of people were yelling and then he got dropped off with a bunch of strangers and stuck in a kennel all night and poked and prodded. He probably thinks he was being punished. Poor baby. Lots of lovins for puppy today.

Oh no!! Puppy!! I'm glad he's doing better- that must've been frightening. I can't stand seeing my animals possibly hurt themselves. I agree with Kat, you should teach him "drop it" and "leave it". He's young so he'll learn it fast  What a scary night. Lots of love for puppy today!!

Glad it worked out ok - just a tip for future - NO dog can keep their mouth shut if you push down on their tongue - stick a finger through the gap behind the canines and push.
Have done it with dogs from yorkshire terrier to doberman/rottweiler and even a great dane and it has never failed me

Thanks...problem was we couldn't get to the little stinker because he went right under the bed as soon as he got it in his mouth! But all is well now...he is home and doing great. I have to be careful to put him in his bed when I'm getting pills out. Obedience classes probably are a good idea too.

Yup...I will try that if he gets a hold of something and doesn't immediately go underneath a piece of furniture to hide with it! Little stinker!

Just another useless fact if you hook your fingers behind the canines of a dog you can lead it around like you would a horse with a head collar on (some dogs will just yawn so your fingers lose grip and it is easier with larger dogs).
If you know what you are doing it is impossible for the dog to bite you whilst your fingers are there (getting them there and getting them back out again is another story  )
