Hello from Titusville Florida

Hello, my name is Uncle Rev (AKA Christopher Lee)

I am now an accidental snake enthusiast. I was perusing through CL and saw an excellent deal on a massive glass tank/stand with the intentions of restarting an aquarium (lost my original collection in the hurricane string that devastated Florida.) However, when my son and I traveled across town to pick up this mother of all glass creations I encountered a pretty outrageous scenario:

The owner of the glass tank asked me if I was interested in the snakes that were in the tank. I had informed him that I only came for the tank. He merely shrugged and said he would toss the snakes in the backwoods since he could no longer house them. However, I could have them with the tank no extra charge.

My shoulders slumped and my mood immediately blackened. Florida kills so many snakes every year because of people just like this. So I examine these guys and man it took one look and I was in love. Plain old ball python and a red tailed boa (yes, they were housed together...)

Well long story short, here I am with 2 new additions to my family, 2 new enclosures, heat pads, lamps, a burgeoning new addiction. I am hopelessly hooked.

In my first month I have fought off mites, fixed bites from the rats the previous owner was feeding the ball python and spent an *** ton of money. So here I am learning each step of the way.

Thanks for all the info thus far and hello!

Re: Hello from Titusville Florida

Welcome on board and thank you on the snake's behalf.

I too started out handling my friend's snake and fell in love, however, I have learned so much in the short time being on here that I was able to see that my friend does a lot of things wrong with her Rosy Boa, who used to be very tame and docile, I fell in love holding her, but now she just strikes at anything that touches her. She has a 55 Gal tank with a tiny heating pad in the middle, a heating lamp above which moves around whenever the tank opens, and only one hide. She also took out the only branch that was in there because the snake tried to climb up and one time escaped. The Boa is only about 5 months old but she is so tiny, maybe 22" long and 1 1/2 inches in diameter. She's been only feeding her one mouse fuzzy a week so today when I got the feeders I got a hopper instead and, of course, the Boa ate it without a problem. And to top it off, the tank is in the living room where it's Grand Central Station so I suggested to take it up to her bedroom in the hopes the snake will calm down and can relax.

I'll be keeping an eye on it and since I've been getting the feeders I can just pick up a larger one so that the snake can thrive.

Re: Hello from Titusville Florida

I want to say Charley; it was a few years back when 3 hurricanes hit the space coast all in the course of a month. We were without power for about 3 weeks and it blew my living room apart.

Hehehe, that was a crazy month.
