Since I was not there, I can only assume.
In my observations with the baby garters, they got mouths full of bedding during the thrashing, and not before.
Last week we had a new member with a "thrashing" corn snake, I hated to reply to that one, because I was right and the snake was dead hours after the post was made.
I can't explain it, but once the snake rolls over on it's back and starts convulsing, it's too late to prevent death at that point.
The head rubbing could very well have been the onset of the dreaded thrashing part.

sad =/ it really sucks when snakes have neurological issues (or any issues for that matter) and there is nothing you can do to help/prevent it.

Had a baby ball python and during its first feeding with me I found it upside down 24 hours later. Talking to a breeder they thought that the place I bought the food from might have been contaminated with fertilizer since it was a feed store. Whatever the case it was really disturbing to see. It didn't "thrash" so much as sort of lunge around. I got it out of its home and holding it watched as it seemed to try and get its bearings only to end up with his head upside down. Overall it was really disturbing to watch and at the same time really sad.

Sorry for you loss. I have only lost one BP in the past. It was a well established adult. We don't always know why our exotics die. If you have ever kept fish you know what I mean. When keeping an exotic in an artificial environment, we can't always figure out where things went wrong. Sometimes, like in people and everything else, there is an undiagnosed underlying condition that is impossible to detect. To be safe I would check your food sources and clean and disinfect all of your animals enclosures and water containers. Best wishes.
