Dakota's first f/t

She touch it barely look at it. All she wanted was out of her tub. I closed the lid maybe she needed to be alone with it a while no she went on the other side. She had no interest at all. As I have posted before she was being fed in her tank by a girl who just threw in 4-5 live mice and left her go once a month I got her a small rat as per many recommendations I received so now what do I try a f/t mouse feeding her in her tank is just not an option. I know I will eventually slip up and get a special set of holes but I would rather it not be because I feed her in the wrong place. And all I have read about mites and live making her sick. Help !!

Can't really help ya with the illness, but I feed all my snakes in their enclosures and the who absolutely no aggression towards me... I don't think its that bad of a thing to do, just my opinion...

How do you think live is making her sick? I feed my bp live and she's never been sick....

The switchover may not be easy, could be worth leaving it another week so that she is more hungry before trying again.

I rescued a corn a while back and when she initially fed for me i had to leave her in a container with the f/t mouse put the lid on and cover the container with a blanket somthat she was totally in the dark, i never "left" her but after about fifteen mi utes would check her and the mouse was gone.

Re: Dakota's first f/t

if she is sick she needs to go to a vet. try warming the rat up, i either leave them our for a few hours and get them to room temp, boil some water and dip them in for 30 seconds or so, or i use a blow dryer to warm them up before feeding. if she doesn't take F/T the first time don't worry. snakes can go a long time without food, i once had a stubborn king who wouldn't eat for at least 6 months and she is fine now. you can also try tease feeding it. hold the rat with a pair of tongs and wiggle it around in front of the snake. i heat mine up and tease feed and i have no problems since i stated doing both.

Re: Dakota's first f/t

She is not sick at all actually very healthy I was just worried that if I kept feeding her live that eventually she would get mites of lice or something from the live that could be prevented by using f/t and as I learned from my frozen vs live thread most people feel the same way. I am glad to here that she can go a while with out food I will still worry (that is just how I am) but I will also know she will be ok if she does not take it. Thanks for all your help and suggestions.

Snake can't get mites or lice from mice. If you feed mice from a pet store they are captive breed and should be just fine. Just never give your snake any wild caught mice or rats and you should be fine. The only real thing to worry about with feeding live is them biting your snake. Which if you thump them then feed them to your snake they can't hurt them.
