More bad publicity
Just read this online Neb. man dies after being strangled by pet snake - U.S. news- msnbc.com - can't understand people letting a constrictor of any size near their neck .
And from reading the report the animal seems to be the one blamed "cats dogs or snakes can react unpredicatably" - what about the owner letting it near his neck in the first bloody place!!!

Re: More bad publicity
I love the city's reaction. They're looking into banning snakes.
On the bright side, they didn't kill the snake.

Re: More bad publicity
this is why you never wrap a large snake around your neck or get it out without help or at least telling your friend what to do in the worst case scenario. obviously the friend had no knowledge of big snakes or this would have never happened. the price of ignorance will big snakes can be death and was in this case.

Re: More bad publicity
IMO I thought they reacted fairly well to the situation. It is sad someone had to die but at the same time, they did state that any animal can react in an unpredictable manner, snakes being more instinctual animals obviously wouldn't think that they were about to kill the warm tree they just anchored on to with their tail. At least they didn't euthanize the poor thing. overall to me it wasn't a negative article towards snakes especially coming from MSNBC and AP. The guy was a little off if he decided to let the thing anchor itself around his neck... sad he had to die though.

Re: More bad publicity
i am assuming that they were both guys (i don't know though i just heard a guy and his friend) should not have had too much trouble getting a boa off of someone. they are weaker by their tails and are not too difficult to unwrap. i am not saying that this is true in 100% of the cases but a full grown human is too big for a meal and they tend to let go when you unwrap them and reanchor to something else (like the friends arm or something that is not life threatening) it takes less than a minute for a boa to kill you around your neck if it has a good grip and no one who isn't there can get there quick enough to help. i just think that this all could have been avoided if they had been a little more careful.

Re: More bad publicity
This is exactly why I get annoyed at people not being arsed to learn about snakes before buying one. It irritates me so much I can hardly bare to think about it. The last guy I read about that did something like this had gone out to buy a live chicken to feed his umpteen foot Bermese python. He went TO THE BUTCHERS with it wrapped around himself, no doubt hoping for a round of applause for owning a snake. Once he got home, all alone, stinking of chicken and drapped in a huge Bermese python, it killed him. If he hadn`t of died that way I`m sure at some point he would have decided to do the ironing in a paddling pool or something. I think it`s really poor that new laws are being passed, or are being suggested anyway, to stop people owning certain snakes in the US, citing examples like these. I have to say though, I don`t think I`d be so against a licence for snakes, to weed out people too stupid or complacent to be allowed to own them...

Re: More bad publicity
I really think licensing for bigger snakes is a good idea. This would at least help weed out the fools who should not have snakes, much less any pet.

Re: More bad publicity
yes i support a license for big snakes, a small test to pass what the snakes needs are and a license at the end of it, may be a permit with proof of all the thng in place it needs to ensure the animals well being. as for pets killing their owner its sad and hope it never happens but the owner has made the choice knowing what could happen, how is it that after worst comes to worst, someone else has the right to ban them, makes no sence to me, like if i go jump off a building or fall for that matter what are we going to ban the building of tall towers.... no, i knew i could fall going to the edge becuase i like the edge for what ever reason i could fall but i did it anways,if i fall, its my own damn fault. sad but true. <<my 2 cents of others taking liberty of judging what i call a passion in my life. i like adreniline so i white river raft and go skydiving.cliff jumping... do extreme stuff, i dont blame anyone but myself when the risks i take for this enjoyment catches up to me, how could anyone feel taking this away from me is for my own good??
maybe if they made a test and a licence system so Everyone knows all the fact and it cant be disputed we will get are freedom of living the life we want again .

Re: More bad publicity
Overall I thought it was well written and not aimed at making the snake look guilty.
By including cats and dogs, I thought that was in good taste, basically saying any pet can harm you under the right circumstances.

Re: More bad publicity
I support licensing and rfid tagging for large snakes. But the government doesn't seem interested in regulating, they just want to ban. I realize a ban is cheaper, but given their track record of banning things instead of regulating them you'd think they'd realize that a ban is only going to turn law abiding citizens into criminals.
My dog has to be licensed, and has to wear tags. A lot of jurisdictions require RFID tagging for cats and dogs. If my dog gets picked up off my property, I get fined. Why is it so difficult to extend these same rules to other animals instead of banning them?

Re: More bad publicity
Confucius may never know.
If I were to make an educated guess, I think that mankind in general thinks cats and dogs are a more important part of life than exotic pets.
as a whole, there are more dog/cat owners than exotic owners, so there is more government interest in the dogs/cats, and more money to be made controlling them.
look at the numbers of "puppy mills"
yet no one seems to care about the "herp mills" and yes they do exist.
Some of the herp breeders care about nothing aside from how many snakes / lizards or turtles they can sell $$$$$$$.
I try and give my money to breeders that I know take the animal's welfare into consideration.
