Help cornsnake behaviour

Hi please can anyone help?
My new 6 month old corn snake keeps hidind at the top of his tank. I have a heatmat and hides at each end but he insists on climbing up and settling in on the glass ledge at the top. Is this ok for him? he's alert and feeds well but just wanted to check. I know they like to climb but thought this was a little odd as he always goes straight back up even if I put him at the bottom.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated

sounds like he just likes it better as a hide. If he's active and alert and eating I wouldnt worry.

Sounds to me like your corn does enjoy the top of the tank better as a hide. You could try putting in plants/branches so it's more "hide like". Also if you have any lights along the top of the tank that might be why he's going up there. My BP loves to try to curl around his UV & heat lights. I had to baracade them with screen and a wire cage so he wouldn't get hurt. As long as he's eating/showing normal behaviour I wouldn't worry.

Thanks, everyone. I was just being an nurotic mother i gess and wanted reassurance, i have planned on putting branches and plants on his tank anyway to give him a nicer place. I shall get on to it at the weekend. I'll also try and get some piccies too.
Thanks again,
Kacy

No problem! All of us were newbies at some point! At least you're asking questions before getting a snake--that's putting you way ahead of some people!

The color morph really doesn't make much difference in behavior. Corns are all pretty easy to handle.

Ayamecorn, is one of the hides located over the heat mat?
How big are the hides in comparison to the snake?
Is your corn going to the same high spot every time, and is it near a light or heat lamp, or is it away from a light or heat lamp?

Sometimes they go a particular place because they are seeking warmth or a cooler spot.

Sometimes they just seem to like hanging out in the space between the top and the tank, which is what it sounds like you have your corn in. Several of my snakes would squeeze themselves onto that little ledge and stay there. I learned later that (for the ones that were not arboreal types) that they needed smaller hides or the hides needed to be relocated to provide a hide with more warmth.

Good luck!
