incredible amazing king snake

Well, i had bought a baby california king snake in august of this year. The same snake escaped from its cage in november. I had looked for weeks and had eventually given up. I pretty much thought that the snake would be dead by starvation or my three cats and one dog would have killed it. But much to my surreal astonishment i found the live snake about a foot and a half bigger and curled up in my basement. I was completely in shock. After the shock wore off i tried to grasp the idea that a baby king snake survived an entire pittsburgh winter. Well, i just thought i would share this extremely bazarre case of survival.

A foot and a half bigger then it was before? It must have had something to eat in the meantime since it escaped. Maybe your basement has mice.

Unless it could sustain that much growth on the energy it had.

I have a Cali King, which escaped for several days once. I often wonder how it would manage if I never found it.

Re: incredible amazing king snake

well you have discovered a new form of pest control. As well as a build in terrarium.

With a heat source and the occasional mouse, the snake could live there indefinitely.

Re: incredible amazing king snake

the easiest way to find a snake is to lure it out with food or a heat source.

No some stupid owner failed to properly control & contain their Retic Mark
P.S. not that I feel sorry for the cat but the snake was killed as a direct result of your negligence. Incidents such as that is why bans are proposed & enforced.

Re: incredible amazing king snake

In Defense of cat lady: I would be upset if someones cat had killed my snake due to loose security. People can be attached to cats ( I like cats too) and tend to villianify large snakes.

I share your sentiments Mark, There are so many cases of snakes escaping and causing damage or harm, as well as cases of reptile abandonment and neglect. People (not pointing fingers) need to be sure that the reptile they buy isn't an impulse buy and that they find out how to care for it. Maybe then shelters won't hate the reptile trade and try to get it banned.

I live in Vancouver, Canada where they are getting close to banning some if not most reptiles and exotics. The legislation is in the works. There needs to be awareness of proper care and to relieve the public of misconceptions.

I think its partly fear of snakes.
